Psilocybin physically repairs the brain by reversing cellular damage and restoring the growth of new neurons, research shows.
For decades, major depressive disorder has been treated primarily with traditional antidepressants, which often take weeks to show results and fail to help millions of patients.
However, a groundbreaking study published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry reveals that psilocybin, the active compound in 'magic mushrooms,' can physically reverse stress-induced brain damage.
Lead researchers Agnieszka Bysiek and Krystyna Gołembiowska of the Polish Academy of Sciences demonstrated that just two low doses of psilocybin successfully reversed depressive behaviors and restored cellular growth in the brains of chronically stressed subjects. This study provides crucial preclinical evidence that the psychedelic compound directly repairs the neurological damage caused by chronic stress.
The biological impacts of the treatment were profound, focusing on the hippocampus—the brain region critical for emotion and memory that normally shrinks under chronic stress. Psilocybin not only normalized stress hormones and restored brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, but it also promoted the birth of brand-new neurons.
This rapid and lasting physical rewiring allowed the subjects to overcome severe anxiety and recover their ability to experience pleasure.
