Why do some families go through an oral-tie release only to continue struggling afterward?

Sometimes the issue is not simply whether the restricted tissue was released.

Without proper preparation, aftercare and functional support, a baby may still struggle to use their tongue effectively.

A release can create the opportunity for better movement... but the tongue still needs help learning what to do with that movement. 🤍

A tongue-tie release is not a magic, one-step solution.

The procedure may release restricted tissue, but that is only one part of the journey.

Proper assessment, pre-work, aftercare, oral exercises and continued support all matter when helping a baby learn to use their tongue differently.

Successful care begins when we stop treating a release like a quick fix and start treating it like a process. 🤍

Your baby can be gaining weight and still be working really hard to feed.

Weight gain is important, but it is only one piece of the feeding picture. We also want to look at HOW your baby is feeding and whether their mouth, tongue, lips and jaw are functioning efficiently together.

Some signs that may tell us a baby is compensating during feeding include:

• Clicking or repeatedly losing suction at the breast or bottle

• Milk leaking from the corners of the mouth

• Very long or very frequent feeds

• Becoming frustrated, pulling on and off or seeming unsettled during feeds

• Coughing, choking or gulping

• Excessive air intake, gassiness or discomfort after feeding

• A parent experiencing persistent ni**le pain or damage

• Baby seeming tired or falling asleep quickly during feeds

• Difficulty maintaining a deep, comfortable latch

None of these signs automatically mean your baby has a tongue tie, and one symptom by itself does not give us a diagnosis.

They are CLUES.

A functional feeding evaluation looks at the whole baby… not just whether a frenulum is present and not just whether the number on the scale is increasing.

We want to understand how your baby is using their tongue, how well they create and maintain suction, their oral motor coordination, feeding position, tension patterns, milk transfer and the overall feeding experience for both baby AND parent.

Sometimes babies become very good at compensating.

They may find another way to get the milk they need, but that does not always mean feeding is as comfortable or efficient as it could be.

And if an oral restriction is suspected, the answer should never automatically be, “Just release it.”

Function matters before, during and after any procedure. Proper evaluation, preparation, feeding support and follow-up are incredibly important.

🤍 You deserve more than “baby is gaining weight, so everything must be fine.”

If feeding feels difficult, uncomfortable or simply doesn’t feel right, trust that it is worth asking more questions.

🎓🤍 WORDS FROM A MAMA | BABY GRADUATE 🤍🎓

From losing weight and hour-long nursing sessions… to efficiently transferring milk, gaining weight, exclusively breastfeeding, and THRIVING. 🥹

Mama tells Georgie’s story best:
“When Georgie was about 7 weeks old, we went for another weight check with his pediatrician. Unfortunately, Georgie wasn’t gaining weight like the pediatrician hoped to see.... rather, he was losing weight... so we were encouraged to start supplementing with formula following nursing sessions. That, in addition to his chiropractor’s concerns, I knew the next step was to contact Courtney, being my goal was to exclusively breastfeed Georgie and formula was only something I wanted to jump into if absolutely necessary.

Courtney got us in where we then did a weighted feed. Not only was Georgie taking an hour to feed, but in that hour he wasn’t getting the quantity needed to gain weight. She immediately developed a plan for us to get him eating more frequently, advised me on supplements to take to increase my supply that had dwindled due to his lack of removal, a pumping schedule to increase supply, and to follow up all nursing sessions with a bottle of breast milk.

Leaving this appointment, I felt so defeated because HOW was I going to do all of these extra steps while also chasing a one-year-old?!?!

We followed up with visits weekly, if not two times a week. While he started to gain weight, we were encouraged to consider getting his tongue, lip, and cheek ties revised because he was still eating slow. We did.

Now, over TWO MONTHS after our first visit with Courtney, Georgie is removing milk efficiently and taking in exactly what he should be, has gained weight, is eating quicker, we are no longer following up feeds with bottles of breast milk, and HE IS THRIVING!!

We are so thankful for Honeysuckle & Pearl and their dedication to helping moms and babies navigate curve balls thrown at us!!” 🤍

THIS is why graduation days are so special. 😭

There were extra feeds. Pumping sessions. Bottles. Appointments. Hard decisions. And a mama trying to do all of it while chasing a one-year-old.

And today? Georgie is thriving, and Mama reached the breastfeeding goal she fought so hard for. 🥹

Motherhood is a labor of love in every sense of the word. 🤍

It’s feeding a baby while the rest of the house sleeps.
Washing pump parts again.
Learning cries, cues and tiny little preferences no one else notices.
Holding them when you’re touched out.
Showing up when you’re exhausted.
And carrying a thousand invisible things no one will ever see.

There are no timecards. No weekends off. And most of the work will never make it onto a résumé.

But it matters.

So on a day meant to honor hard work, we want to honor you, Mama.

The work you do inside the walls of your home matters. The way you nourish, comfort, protect and love your babies matters.

And you deserve to be cared for, too. 🤍

Our Courtney recently had the opportunity to speak at Bellview Baptist Vacation Bible School, and she came home with more than just a full heart. 🥹

The sweet people of Bellview Baptist put together encouraging gift bags AND generously gave a donation specifically to help us care for and support moms in need.

There is something so special about a group of people choosing to come alongside mothers... many of whom they may never personally meet... and saying, “We see you. We care about you. And we want to help.”

“But we had the tongue tie released… why are we still struggling?”

Because releasing restricted tissue and teaching a baby’s tongue how to function differently are two different things.

A tongue-tie release may create new range of motion but baby still has to learn how to USE that movement for feeding.

That’s why we care so much about what happens before and after a release.

Before → preparing baby, working on feeding function, and helping parents become comfortable working in baby’s mouth.

After → appropriate wound care as directed by the treating provider + continuing to work on the feeding skills and tongue function that brought you here in the first place.

A release shouldn’t be treated like a magic button.

It’s one piece of the process. 🤍

Sometimes the best way to explain what we do is simply to let our mamas tell you themselves. 🥹

“My son had a pretty bad tongue tie and two upper lip ties when he was born. He wasn't struggling with eating enough or gaining weight, which was good, but because of my tongue tie and knowing the issues they can cause as an adult, my husband and I decided we should go ahead and get them revised.

After the surgery, he had some pain nursing for a few days, which made doing the stretches hard for me to do on him, but eventually he healed up and he's happier than he was before.

Courtney is great and so patient with answering any and all questions tongue tie or nursing related, both for newborns or as they get older and go through different phases.

We're glad she does what she does and recommend her to others!” 🤍

THIS is why we do what we do.

Not every baby with oral restrictions has the same symptoms.
Not every feeding journey looks the same. And sometimes support means having someone in your corner to answer the questions, walk through the hard days with you, and help you feel confident in the decisions you're making for your baby.
