Nature is so awesome. The start of spring in the US south has started doing its thing. That means the first plants to show out are things like cleavers, dead nettle, and red bud. Each of these plants have commonality in the benefits they provide us. Coming out of winter, where we stored energy, ate dense food, and laid around a little more, to springing into growth, more sunshine, and the necessary energy levels to get through those hot trying times.
We wanna be hydrated
we wanna shed what we took on during winter
we want to detox that mess and leave it in the past.
With the change of the season come general colds and sore throats, 2 of these herbs specifically have soothing properties for this issue. Its like nature knows exactly what we need or something 🤗

read on to see some* internal benefits of using these plants during this time of year

Deadnettle- jammed with nutrients, antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties. A diurectic and soothing digestif, good for coughs and sore throat
Tasting notes: slightly minty and sweet, with subtle vegetal and herbaceous notes

Red Bud (Eastern variety) - an antioxidant, both young leaves and buds can be used to fight colds and respiratory issues. Antioxidant, anti inflammatory
Tasting notes: sweet floral notes, herbaceous, slightly tart (when pods are collected young, this is when its antioxidant value is most high)

Cleavers: great for lymphatic drainage, diurectic, and a digestive aid
Tasting notes: bitter, cool herbaceous notes with vegetal undertones

All of these can be prepared in a variety of ways, just a few follow:

Red buds - young pods are pickled and used as garnish, syrups, tea, and desserts. Leaves can be eaten raw or stir fried like spinach

Cleavers- make into a quart jar of tea and drink throughout the day. Can also be tinctured or used as an infused oil or poultice for skin soothing and wound healing

Dead Nettle- tea, tinctures, leaves can also be stir fried

Get to snacking and have a great season!

Favorite time of the year and one of the most important plant allies for me. Skullcap flowers 💐 infused in honey. I leave my infused honeys to sit about 4-6 months or until the flowers have lost most of its color. I add flowers as they bloom throughout the season.
Skullcap’s power lies in its ability to support and nourish the body’s central nervous system as a nervine, and may help with anxiety or stress. I add this honey to my nightly cup of tea

I am a homeschool parent in SWLA and have noticed a big need for art classes that are both engaging and easy on the wallet for all students and their guardians. This is a community offering, something I feel in my heart called to do. I have been a creative all my life, focusing in many mediums and selling my art at markets and local shops. I believe each and every person has creative ability and want to encourage you and your children to discover, play and engage with the creative in each of you.

For now, this will be offered once a week on Thursdays from 1-2/230 pm. If more interest is there, I will open a second spot for Fridays at the same time. More offerings, like more advanced watercolor classes or other mediums may be available in the future depending on interest. Please let me know if you have any questions or have feedback. I am honored to be able to host you or your children in learning this sweet medium.

Class is limited to 10 spots per session.

If you are interested in attending, please message us on messenger with child/ren’s age and your email so we may send a payment invoice through PayPal. Payment must be received prior to class. Other payment arrangements may be made upon request. Just let me know!

Good almost noon! I’m not sure if I’ve ever fully explained this so I’m going to give this a shot at being quick 😆 The plant/artisan shop, Petty Ole Plants is located inside The Mail Center at 1842 Ruth St. When you’re driving down Ruth, it can be easy to miss because it is facing South versus West like the rest of the businesses near by. In the interest of full transparency, this is a low budget project that I am hoping will turn into a well operating business, therefore, I don’t have signage yet. I am doing everything I can to get the word out that it is, in fact, two businesses in one. I DO also run The Mail Center. This means that you can shop online or in store, and your orders will ship out next day. In certain circumstances, shipping could be same day. You can also get stamps, drop off letter mail, pre labeled packages, and even rent a private mailbox for you or your business, all from right here at The Mail Center. It is all overseen and operated by myself, Haley, so you can bet your Mama on personalized services like no other! Speaking of Mamas, we have an incredible selection of gift items that would be ✨PERFECT✨ for Mothers Day! And if Mama doesn’t live nearby, I’ll pack it and ship it straight to her door for you! I would really love the opportunity to earn your business whether it’s items from the shop, or services from The Mail Center. 💕 Tell ya Mama ‘nem!

I’ve been having so much fun making watercolor flower wreaths featuring some loosely painted native flowers. From the 1st to the final, you can see it evolving. 😊 i’d love to incorporate native insects, fungi, and other fun nature things so i’ll definitely be playing around more!
