After a storm passes through North Florida, it's tempting to grab a chainsaw and start clearing a downed limb or a leaning tree before anyone else can get out to help. That's usually when the real danger starts.

A tree that's already been stressed by wind can be holding tension in ways that aren't obvious from the ground. Limbs that look stable can be barber-chaired or under spring load, and a leaning tree can shift or drop without warning once a cut is made. Add in the chance of hidden power lines tangled in a downed canopy, and a storm-damaged tree becomes one of the riskier DIY projects a homeowner can take on.

If a tree is leaning, split, or resting on a structure after a storm, it's worth having a professional take a look before anyone gets near it with a saw.
