Here we are knocking on September's door. This is quite possibly the best time for planting most trees and shrubs. I like planting from now until ground freeze up. One huge benefit of this is that most of the foliage growth is done for the season and the plant is putting energy into root growth. Another is that while the plant is not so vigorously growing the soil has lots of time to settle around the roots before the next season of vigorous growth. I also like to plant small trees. It allows me to train them as I would like, saves money, and is less stressful for the plant. Here I am offering some spring grafted apple trees for sale for fall planting. I know the picture kinda sucks (it is fairly difficult taking plant pictures when everything is green). These trees are anywhere from 8 inches to 3 ft tall. Usually in the next year they put on somewhere between 2 and 5 ft of growth. Cultivars and prices are listed in the second picture.

I don't have a ton of fresh eating pear experience under my belt yet, but trying to get more every year. Here is a new one for me from this season, Harrow Delight. This is an early season European pear. Of the 6 cultivars of pears I have eaten fresh off of the tree, this went into the #2 favorite spot. Sorry I don't currently have any of these trees for salešŸ˜¢.

Harvested some Summercrisp pears today. They are not my favorite, but they make a nice looking early/mid season pear. They are resistant to Fireblight, and also seem to be resistant to scab.

Do you see what I see? Sorry, this is the third ripe fig off this little Petite Negra. The plant is only about a foot tall and had 26 figs on it for it's first year of production. I was so excited to eat the first two that I didn't take the time to take a picture. They were very good!

It's gooseberry season! One of my favorite times of the year. If you've never had gooseberries; I like to compare them to green grapes. If you like them tart, pick when green or just starting to blush. If you like more sweet, or balanced flavor pick when colored. Some cultivars are very good at all stages while others loose flavor when fully colored. I grow about 8 different cultivars here, and have about 5 of those currently available for sale.

So a little less than a year ago I decided to plant 3 figs out in the ground. I have read that if figs are there by July first they have a pretty good chance of ripening. This chicago Hardy seems to be trying to earn it's keep. After a few pep talks, it showed some figs a few days ago.
