The Ugly Art Studio leads guided artmaking-for-wellbeing workshops that bring teams together, on-site in Central Florida and live online anywhere in the US.

90 minutes, all materials included, and every participant keeps a curated art kit, so they can continue making art even after the workshop ends. We handle all of the set-up and clean up!

A growing body of research links making art to better wellbeing. And making something alongside your coworkers is a natural way to connect.

We buckle our seatbelts without a second thought. Are we getting closer to treating artmaking the same way?

Yesterday was the first full day of the Bridging Visual Arts & Healthcare Symposium, and .fancourt opened the day with a keynote that inspired us all.

One idea especially stuck with us: the “seatbelt moment.” The point when years of research and advocacy shift something from debated to simply part of how we take care of ourselves.

She believes the arts are next.

That making time to paint, sing, dance, or create could one day soon feel as ordinary as exercising, eating well, or buckling a seatbelt.

At The Ugly Art Studio, we want artmaking to feel less like a special occasion and more like a normal part of taking care of yourself, and it’s exciting to see the research, conversation and momentum continuing to build around it.

Thank you to the team at Brigham and Women's Hospital for bringing so many people together around this work, and to Dr. Daisy Fancourt for such an energizing start to the day.

Seeing our gift sets being used like this is the part we love most. 🧡

Elisa brought her son and our FLOW Signature Watercolor Gift Set to visit her mom in the hospital. They spent part of the afternoon painting together, and Grandma got to enjoy time with her grandson without the whole visit being about how she was feeling.

This is why we do what we do.

Artmaking can give us a little breathing room when life feels heavy. Picking up a paintbrush together is a chance to be present with someone you love, even in a hospital room. We make our gift sets to help more people experience that, and seeing it happen for this family means so much to us.

Remember when you were a kid and you just… made stuff?

You drew. You sang. You danced. You made up stories. You glued random things together and called it art. And you probably didn’t spend much time wondering whether you were “good” at it.

Then somewhere along the way to adulthood, a lot of us got a little more self-conscious.

“I’m not creative.”
“I can’t draw.”
“I’m just not an art person.”

Psychobiologist Daisy Fancourt, whose research has hugely influenced the way we think about artmaking at The Ugly Art Studio, recently talked about this on the Hidden Brain podcast.

Getting absorbed in the process. Using your hands. Exploring. Playing around. Making decisions without knowing exactly how something will turn out.

Because here’s the thing: many of the benefits of artmaking come from the experience of doing it.

That’s the kind of artmaking we want more people to experience. 🧡
