We are only a few weeks away from Memorial Day. While this signifies the unofficial start to summer, it really means so much more. In the United States, we recognize, honor, and celebrate the service of our military on the last Monday of May, each year. The American holiday was originally called Decoration Day following the Civil War. In 1971, the government declared it a federal holiday. Traditional observation includes attending parades and speeches, visiting cemeteries, and holding family gatherings.
On Memorial Day each year, the country observes a moment of silence in remembrance of those who have lost their lives while serving in our military. According to the History Channel, the moment occurs at 3:00 pm local time wherever you are in the U.S.
It is common practice to decorate graves with flowers and the country acknowledges their patriotism by wearing the nation’s colors: red, white, and blue. American flags are flown at to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon and then briskly lifted in celebration of the nation’s heroes.
