Tight Lines and Bent Rods Y'all
I've had a couple of clients tell me their rod broke, they didn't know why. While there are several reasons a rod will break and not from manufactures defects. One of the most common is "high sticking" or putting all the load at the tip, this is out of the power zone and causes way too much stress on the weekest part of the rod. Look at the chart below and see where the power of your rod comes from. Another reason is banging the rod against the gunwale of the boat, this causes an internal fracture and will eventually break.
Keep them rods in the power zone!

This time of year the weather still reminds us it's winter. Cold, blustery north winds make fishing darn near impossible. This is the time to either upgrade your equipment with a new custom rod or time to repair those damaged rods. Not only do I build new customs I also repair rods, new tip tops, guides, even broken rods. However with broken rods, remember the action will never be the same. I also can re-build your favorite rod or a treasured family heirloom, bringing back to as near as original and possible.

Tight Lines and Bent Rods Y'all
What to do with those pesky jacks? Sure, they're a lot of fun to catch but can they be eatable? Yes, they can but not fried or baked or even grilled. I either smoke them or pickle them. To smoke them, smoke them as you would smoke any other fish, or you can try to pickle them. I learned how to pickle them way back in the late 60s when I was about 17. An old mackerel fisherman on Pier 60 gave me his recipe.
1. Bleed the fish as soon as you catch it
2. Filet, skin, and remove the blood line
3. Layer filets in a ceramic bowl with salt, fish, salt, fish etc. till bowl is full, place in fridge over night
4. The next day rinse the fish till all the sale is removed, cut into bite sized pieces and set aside for later.
5. Bring to a boil 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons pickling spice, remove from heat and add 1 cup cider vinegar, let cool to room temperature
6. In clean Mason Jars layer sliced onion, fish, bay leaf till jar is full. For a little more zing I add sliced hot peppers to the mix
7.Cover with pickling liquid and seal jar, place in fridge, ready to eat in about a week
