Announcing a new "FRED-TALK" on Sunday October 11th at 5pm here in our Langley shop. Fred will share images, videos and insights about his second trip to the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan last month. Learn about these fascinating games and hear how politics have tried to take over the nomads' event.

What are the Nomad Games? Many are traditional skills that grew out of nomadic life: horseback combat, hunting, horsemanship, strength, and strategy. One of the most famous is Kok boru as seen in Fred's video here. Two teams of horsemen compete to grab a goat-shaped object from the ground and carry it through a mass of opposing riders to a goal called a taikazan. Traditionally a goat carcass was used, now a synthetic/dummy version is used.

Laugh for the joy & the health of it! Join us this Sunday 9/20 at 5:30pm for an hour of fun, guided laughter exercises paired with yoga breathing. No mats, traditional yoga poses or prior experience required. We've invited Whidbey's own certified Laughter Yoga instructor Tere Baker to our shop to share this unique and heart-filled practice with you.

Just bring your smile, curiosity and willingness to lighten up and find your laugh! Free to attend, all are welcome. Seating provided. Please arrive a few minutes early to get settled so we can begin at 5:30. See you there! 🤣

Our shop displays a very large assortment of woven bags. Often lumped together under a single phrase “saddle bags,” few of them actually are what we think of as storage bags for horses to carry on their backs. Some long ones are for use on camels, their length allowing the bags to drape over the camel’s hump. Some small ones are for large dogs to carry. Others are different sizes for donkeys or mules. Some are larger capacity for carrying grain or food or even firewood. Others are small capacity and are more ornamental for showing the weavers’ skill rather than for carrying anything. All come from weaving cultures who prize such domestic skills to ornament even everyday storage bags.

How do we, who own no pack animals, utilize these beautiful bags? We often stuff them with pillows to make them usable on a sofa or day bed. Stuffing both sides of a double bag allows you to utilize the whole thing as a single pillow on a sofa or doubling it to make a thicker bolster for back support. ...or you can fill it with grain and throw it over your camel. 😉
