Music for the Eyes

Music for the Eyes A Central Asian Bazaar Our rugs are old and new and come from a variety of Central Asian and Asian countries. We are located on Whidbey Island, Washington.

Music for the Eyes started out as a collection of rugs and artifacts from Central Asia--the five countries with names ending in 'stan after the break-up of the former Soviet Union.

These adorable newlyweds visited our shop right after getting married. Sharon & Fred have known Bella for years and years. To celebrate we invited them to play our new gong. : ) Thank you for your beautiful review Bella!

"We love this place! We go to Whidbey island just to visit Music for the Eyes. And it is what I told my husband I wanted to do just after our wedding! They have the most incredible gemstones and hand made art from around the world. And the folks there are incredible, kind, knowledgeable and make it a deeply meaningful experience if you want to linger and chat."

Our shop displays a very large assortment of woven bags. Often lumped together under a single phrase “saddle bags,” few of them actually are what we think of as storage bags for horses to carry on their backs. Some long ones are for use on camels, their length allowing the bags to drape over the camel’s hump. Some small ones are for large dogs to carry. Others are different sizes for donkeys or mules. Some are larger capacity for carrying grain or food or even firewood. Others are small capacity and are more ornamental for showing the weavers’ skill rather than for carrying anything. All come from weaving cultures who prize such domestic skills to ornament even everyday storage bags.

How do we, who own no pack animals, utilize these beautiful bags? We often stuff them with pillows to make them usable on a sofa or day bed. Stuffing both sides of a double bag allows you to utilize the whole thing as a single pillow on a sofa or doubling it to make a thicker bolster for back support. ...or you can fill it with grain and throw it over your camel. 😉

We adore the stories our visitors share about our shop. Without his knowing, Carolyn purchased an apatite and silver ring from us to propose to her now fiancé Andy. He said yes! They are both talented musicians in the band Mt. Fog. On their latest visit to the shop we played their music for all to hear. Carolyn's voice is so ethereal - give a listen! https://mtfog.bandcamp.com/album/every-stone-is-green

Meet our friend Erica, a Whidbey local. Using a bell, beads and pendants from our shop, she made this beautiful mobile for above her niece's crib. The beads and pendants can swing to ring the bell - so clever. She grew and dried the flowers herself. It's a one-of-a-kind!
