According to the World Gold Council, the price of gold rose +13% during the month of August as measured in US dollars. That was the 3rd highest monthly % increase in the past quarter century.

Among factors contributing to rising prices were strong demand by gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) where in North America, Europe, and Asia, these funds saw a net increase in demand of 3.86 million ounces. COMEX net managed money positions increased 3.1 million ounces. And, of course, net central bank purchases, led by China, added to strong overall demand.

These 3-minute pieces broadcast Wednesdays and Fridays starting about 8:45 to 8:50 AM Eastern on 1320 WILS-AM in Lansing.

For instance, the April 29, 2026 is the most recent commentary posted, where he took the New York Times to task for reporting 40-year old history as breaking news.

If you listen to these commentaries over time you will often hear news weeks or months before the regular media finally gets around to covering the issue. Over the years, these commentaries have won seven awards from the Numismatic Literary Guild.

There is one minor error in the article. I met Robert E. Ladum at the Long Beach Exposition in California in February 2018. The picture for the article is described as being from that encounter. No, it was taken last week at the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh.

It looks like the plunge in precious metals prices following last Friday's speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has bottomed out. Overnight, gold dipped as low as $4,283.75, silver dropped to $63.35, platinum declined to $1,713.00, and palladium sank to $1,293.00.

Ordinarily, today's COMEX closes for these four metal would already have been posted, but none are yet. As of a couple minutes ago, here were the bid and ask spot prices at which Liberty Coin Service was calculating its buy and sell prices on physical products:

Gold: bid spot price $4,369.75/ask spot price $4,373.75
Silver: $64.89/$65.09
Platinum: $1,751.00/$1,761.00
Palladium: $1,339.00/$1,359.00

Yesterday, the interest rate yield on US Treasury debt for all maturities other than one-month rose.

National Award Named For Liberty Coin Service’s Heller!

At the National Coin & Bullion Association (NCBA) annual dinner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Liberty Coin Service (LCS) Communications Officer Patrick A. Heller was not only honored for the third consecutive year with the Legislative Champion Award, it was revealed by NCBA Executive Director David Crenshaw that the award has now been named the Patrick A. Heller Legislative Champion Award. This year’s award recognized his contributions in successful legislative efforts in Alaska, Colorado, Maryland, Nebraska, New York, and Virginia.

Said LCS’s Heller, “Since leading the successful effort for the state of Michigan to enact a precious metals bullion and coin sales tax exemption in 1999, I have met with state government administrators and legislators, testified before legislative committees, or contributed documents in efforts to gain, expand, or retain similar or related exemptions in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Most state government officials didn’t realize that adopting such exemptions created so many in-state jobs, new in-state businesses, higher industry sales, and more in-state trade shows with greater attendance for the coin dealer and hospitality industries that overall tax collections increased by more than the tax expenditure of the exemptions. My background as a CPA helped me present this information in an easy to understand manner. While I am honored by this award, I must recognize the dealers and collectors in each of these states that stepped up as local advocates for these exemptions and to the extraordinary staff at Liberty Coin Service who enabled me to donate my services to work on these campaigns.”

Since coming to Liberty Coin Service in 1981, Heller has now been recognized with more than 20 national awards from multiple organizations, including the American Numismatic Association Harry Forman National Coin Dealer of the Year in 2012, and numerous state and local honors.

The National Coin & Bullion Association, founded in 1983, is a trade association for the numismatic and precious metals bullion communities, serving as the industry’s watchdog to maintain a favorable legislative and regulatory climate at the federal, state, and local government levels. Patrick A. Heller previously served on NCBA’s board of directors for 20 years, 17 years as its treasurer, and is the current volunteer NCBA Industry Affairs Advisor.

As expected following Fed Chair Warsh's speech last Friday, US stock indices fell today, as did the US Dollar Index, and precious metals prices. What was higher was the interest rate yield on almost all maturities of US Treasury debt. The interest rate yield on 10-year Treasury debt was its highest since early 2025.
