Just listed 💟 A mid-century amethyst cocktail ring with enamel details in 14K white gold. The amethyst is 9 carats, a whopping 14 x 12.5mm brilliant cut rectangular stone. It is set in a four-prong basket head with pretty filigree details around the sides. Blue and green enamel accents trim the gallery and make little tulip shapes up the shoulders. The ring is marked for the J.J. White Manufacturing Co., a jeweler in business from the late 1800s to around 1950. They made marvelous cocktail rings beginning in the 1920s and 1930, although I believe that this one dates to the latter part of their tenure. Their rings were die struck, which makes them incredible durable. A beautiful and bold bit of American jewelry manufacturing history!

Shop favorite 💖A mid-Victorian gold gimmel ring with hands that clasp tenderly and assuredly around a pearl-trimmed ruby heart. The heart is marvelous: a purple ruby corrundum with violet tones. The ruby is original to the ring and set with a closed - and likely foiled - back. The ruby is framed with eight seed pearls in various states of wear, also all original to the ring. I considered replacing some of the pearls, but decided against it. I leave it up to you! The mounting is a 15 CT blend of yellow and rose gold, with rose gold coming through more obviously on the shank. The hands are textured and nicely articulated. This was originally a compartment ring, with a little crystal-lidded compartment on the underside of the face. The crystal and the contents are now absent, but the compartment remains.

“Fede” is the the Italian word for “trust.” The hands, and especially the addition of the heart and keepsake compartment, suggest that this was given to a romantic partner as a token of love. Gimmel and fede rings were used to contract marriages as early as the 16th century in Europe.

Just listed ✨An Art Deco engagement ring with a gorgeous platinum mounting trimmed in diamonds and sapphires. The .50 carat VS2/G Old European Cut diamond lifts in a wide-prong head, tucked safely and nearly flush-set with the body of the ring. Four further diamonds trim the gallery, stations on a decorative path that travels up-down-up-down around the head. Channel set quintets of sapphires wrap across the shoulders, marking the top of a cascade of hand engraved split leaf designs down the shank. An elegant and time-tested ring with all the trappings of Edwardian and Art Deco bridal design.

I recently stopped at a mall in Ohio that turned out to be full of 1970s clothes, Precious Moments, and old *ahem* gentlemen’s magazines (I know, what a combo). There are always outliers in these places, though, so I persevered and ended up finding one thing: A pretty green compact. I didn’t look at it closely until the next day, when I noticed that there were two hinges on the top, rather than one. I lifted the smaller lid and there was a man smiling back at me. A LOCKET compartment! A little research and I learned that this is a patented design called the “Foto-Pak,” by Marathon Co. of Attleboro, MA. Compacts and cigarette cases were big business in the 1930s and novelty compacts were quite popular, especially among younger women. I found the patent application for the compact, which was granted 92 years ago on September 25, 1934. How neat!

People at the shop sometimes ask me, “How did you learn about all of this stuff?” and the answer is, “The pieces teach me, one by one.” This history lesson cost $40 - what a deal 💕

Just listed ✔️Dead stock Georg Jensen three row Aria ring, Design 593F in the Jensen canon of designs. The Aria line is discontinued and most of the designs date to the mid 2010s. This ring was designed in 2014. The ring is substantial and visually commanding, weighing between 18.6 and 18.8 grams, depending on the ring size. A sculptural masterpiece and stunning on the hand. Comfortable to wear, too, as are all of Jensen’s pieces. I acquired twenty of these rings, never worn. Sizes 5-6.75 US, 18.6-18.8 grams. Go get one!

Just listed ✨A glowing .78 carat Old Mine Cut diamond in a modern 18K rose gold setting. We acquired this diamond loose and pictured it in a minimal mounting with compass-point prongs to highlight its cushiony shape. This diamond was cut well over 100 years ago, when faceting and polishing technology was limited. The small table of this diamond, the cascading, steep crown facets, the roomy pavilion and (of course!) the open culet are all evidence of an old cutting environment. Set with a low profile.

Note: This ring comes with a jewelry appraisal for insurance/replacement as well as a GIA Report for the diamond.
