"A Starry Night" came off the easel in our studio this morning.

The sky takes the longest. Van Gogh's swirls cannot be painted slowly, they have to move in one breath to keep that rhythm, but oil needs to dry between layers, so most of the work is waiting. Paint for a session, wait a few days, come back and build the thickness up again.

We know it is finished when we tilt the canvas into the light and see each swirl casting its own small shadow.

This one was painted to the measurements of a customer's wall. Today it goes into a rigid tube and starts the trip to their home.

Van Gogh signed very few of his paintings, and when he did, he signed only "Vincent."

He said the surname was too hard for the French to pronounce, but there was more to it than that. A signature was a decision, a way of saying this one is finished and I am willing to stand behind it. Out of hundreds of canvases, only a small number carry his name, and they tend to be the ones he mentioned to his brother with something close to pride.

So here is the question. Four signatures, four paintings. Do you know which is which?

Every painting leaves the studio the same way.

We let the oil cure fully first, because a surface that is still young is easy to damage in transit. Then the canvas is rolled face out, wide and slow, so the paint layers stretch rather than press against each other. It goes into a rigid tube, sealed, labeled, and handed to a courier we have worked with long enough to rely on.

A painting changes a room, provided it arrives the way it left.

Van Gogh wrote to his brother that the oleanders outside would not stop flowering, new blooms pushing the spent ones aside, on and on without pause.

He called them flowers of life. On the table beside the vase he set a yellow paperback he was reading, as if to say that flowers and books are the two things that make a house worth living in.

He painted the whole background lime green, a choice almost nobody made for a still life then, only so the pinks would come out warmer.

Nearly a hundred and forty years later, that same green still catches the morning light coming through a door, and warms a corner of a house that usually goes unnoticed.

In 1893 Monet bought the piece of land across the railway and asked the local authorities for permission to divert a small branch of the river into his garden. The neighbors objected, worried that his strange imported plants would poison the water.

He did it anyway. Dug the pond, built a wooden bridge, set the lilies floating, and then stood in front of that water for the last thirty years of his life.

It was one color at dawn and another by noon, so he painted it again and again, some two hundred and fifty canvases, each one a moment of light that would not come back.

In his final years cataracts clouded his sight until he sometimes had to read the labels on the tubes to know which color he was holding, and still his hand did not stop.

What he left behind was not a garden but a way of showing how a surface of water can hold an entire sky.

In 1874, a critic looked at this painting and meant it as an insult. He accidentally named an entire art movement instead.

This is Impression, Sunrise by Claude Monet, the painting of Le Havre harbor at dawn. When the exhibition catalogue needed a title, Monet simply said, put Impression. That one offhand word is the reason we now call his generation of painters Impressionists.

Critics called it unfinished, mocking the hazy boats and soft brushwork. What they missed took scientists over a century to prove: turn this painting black and white, and the sun almost disappears completely. Monet painted it at the exact same brightness as the sky, so it glows purely from color, not light.
