We didn’t come back from Florence and Sorrento with a suitcase full of souvenirs. We came back with a reminder of what we’re always trying to do here at Atelier Modern: find pieces that reward a second look.

Florence gave us cobblestone games and gelato color studies. Sorrento gave us lemons picked straight off the tree and a four-year-old’s very serious verdict that the gelato was ‘life-changing.’

But the real lesson traveled home with us: beauty isn’t about where you are. It’s about how you choose to see — in a Florentine piazza, or in your own backyard at golden hour.

An engram is a memory's physical trace — a hypothetical mark the brain leaves behind. Adina Andrus borrows the word for "Engram #3," part of her series "Some Things to Remember," painted in egg tempera on Tyvek after a summer researching folk crafts across Poland, Greece, and Romania. The shapes read like a script that never quite resolves into language — not a figure, but a symbol standing in for a place already gone.

In her words: "'Voyage, voyage' longs for places never seen and times long gone, a nostalgia built on distance itself. 'Engram' works the same way... its meaning as elusive as the thing it points to."

Egg tempera on Tyvek, 20" × 16". Paired with "Voyage, voyage" · Desireless.

Everyday Icons + Wild Moments
On View September 8 - November 3, 2026
🥂 ARTIST RECEPTION: September 18, 6-8pm

Working across watercolor/charcoal, photography + oil, Rachael Grimm, Jane Sikorski, and Matthew Miller recalibrate our view of the ordinary and the elemental - from pantry objects and quiet interiors to intimate portraits of horses and fleeting gestures. The reception will celebrate their work as well as Ana's birthday 🎉. Musical guests 🎵 Adam Holland and P.J. Griffith will add to the festivities.

Co-owner + curator, Ana Z. O'Neill, spotlights Amanda Arbeter's "Surfin' USA." An aptly named piece if there ever was one. Paired with the Beach Boys' original, it's iconic, sun-soaked, and moves like a wave rushing up to shore.

Painted in Rye Beach Park, the piece pulls its color straight from the ocean and shoreline — the kind of painting you could splash right into and feel the cold surf hit your skin.

Acrylic on canvas, 40" × 30". Paired with "Surfin' USA" · The Beach Boys.

Every mark tells a story. "Once Upon A Time" unfolds like a fairy tale in paint — golden flourishes, sweeping blue gestures, and tiny hidden details that only surface the longer you look.

Melissa Benedek on the pairing: "'I Feel It Coming' captures that quiet sense of anticipation and possibility. Its smooth rhythm and hopeful energy mirror the way I approach painting, trusting the process and allowing emotions to unfold naturally."

Acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 36" × 36". Paired with "I Feel It Coming" · The Weeknd, Daft Punk.

A woman lost in her book — and in the personas she borrows from it — while her body stays lounged before a setting sun. 's "The Reader, Dusk" as a print on paper, working wood relief, stenciling, and re-purposed vintage printing plates into the printmaking process; look closely and a mirrored "goddess" surfaces from one of those plates.

Print on paper, 25" × 25" × 2".

Paired with "mangetout" (The Dare Remix) · Wet Leg & The Dare.

On view now through September 8.

Paint on paper, 50" × 38". A landscape that isn't quite a landscape — rhythmic, wave-like forms sliding from deep violet and red into radiant orange and yellow, the way certainty gives way to something more open.

Sonjie Feliciano Solomon painted the series a month after leaving her job. In her words: "I felt a mix of anxiety from being untethered, yet hopeful for a future spending my time in the studio."

Paired with "Free" · Florence and the Machine — the song on repeat while she made it.

On view now through September 8.
