A sweeping change to federal drug policy could have long-term implications nationwide, including here in Laredo.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the federal government to reclassify ma*****na from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance, marking one of the most significant shifts in drug policy in decades.
Speaking from the Oval Office alongside medical professionals, Trump said the decision was driven by widespread public demand and the medical needs of patients.
Trump added that he received overwhelming support for the move, noting he heard little opposition.
The executive order instructs the U.S. attorney general to take all necessary steps to complete the formal rulemaking process as quickly as possible. Under current federal law, Schedule I drugs are defined by the Drug Enforcement Administration as having no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. That category includes drugs such as he**in, L*D, ecstasy, and until now, ma*****na.
Under the new classification, ma*****na would fall under Schedule III, which applies to substances with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence. Other Schedule III drugs include Tylenol with codeine, testosterone, anabolic steroids, and ketamine.
While the rulemaking process is still required, the announcement signals a major policy shift that could influence medical treatment, law enforcement priorities, and future legislation.
