Batch of Okito-Nielsen Chinese Sticks - Completed!

Hi there, folks! If you have been following my posts, here is a final 2-minute process video of this project’s completion.

In the video, I show a bit of the decal application, the application of a sealer coat, assembly, and my sewing of the custom bags for them.

Unfortunately, I can’t show the “secret.” In my opinion, that component is a work of art and the reason these are an amazing piece of apparatus. The action of these is very smooth and deceptive.

They are now posted on our website, and I will have them available at the upcoming Magic Live Convention here in Las Vegas.

If you attend Magic Live, come by the booth. It would be great to see you and say “hello.” Be well! ❤️😊

Another “progress video” of the Okito-Nielsen Chinese Sticks. (This is the continuation of my recent post about this project.)

This is one of those tedious jobs that requires a lot of patience to complete. Thank God for my Audible account! I listen to lots of books during the process. Lol!

Have a great week, folks!

As you have noticed, I have been taking a little break from posting too much on social media. The reason: Staying away from the screen has been good for my soul.

Luckily, I have kept myself busy throughout these months.

This video shows one of the projects I have been working on: A new batch of Okito-Nielsen Chinese Sticks. The Chinese Stick effect is a classic of magic, and in my humble opinion, we make one of the best products of this effect on the market.

I don’t work much with metal, so Robert Boulette (our machinist) makes the heavy-duty brass components for the effect. I then dutifully pick them up in California and bring them to Vegas, where I assemble and paint them in the Okito style. This effect involves a lot of tiny details.

Apart from the sticks, I have been working on a couple of custom items for clients, a piece of furniture for me, and I am preparing the magic prop class I will be teaching at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in a couple of months. My plan is to teach how to fabricate a few simple magic effects and will share everything I know about fabricating them. Students will leave the class with at least two fully finished props.

Here is the link for the class, if you are interested: https://www.marcadams.com/workshop/crafting-magic-boxes-hiding-things-plain-sight-lupe-nielsen/

I took some time off and travelled during the last ten days, and had a blast in doing so. I reopened Nielsen Magic last Monday, and I am finally caught up and back to my regular schedule.

I was checking the mail and received the latest issue of “The Linking Ring” magazine, which is the publication from the International Brotherhood of Magicians. It is the June 2026 issue - Volume 106, Number 6. Guess what? I am the featured craftsman in Bill Winter’s column: “Inside the Wizard’s Workshop” this month! The monthly column is about the magic craftsmen in the world of magic. It is a three page spread on yours truly.

It always feels good to be recognized by one’s peers.

A big thank you goes to Bill Winters for the great article, and a huge debt of gratitude goes to God, as well as all the friends and clients that have supported Nielsen Magic through the years. Norm opened his little business seventy years ago in 1956, and it has been my privilege to have been with Norm and the business for over thirty years of its history.

I still manufacture magic and will continue doing my best to make high end quality products for magicians worldwide.

Life in the Desert…

I have been living in Las Vegas for nearly thirty one years. In most parts of the country there are four seasons. I have come to believe that in Vegas there are only two seasons: “Mild” and “Very, Very Hot”.

In a few weeks temperatures will be over 100 degrees Fahrenheit in this part of the world.

Because it is very difficult to work in a shop with such temperatures, God has blessed me with a pair of handy swamp coolers.

Every year, for decades, we have performed this “swamp cooler ceremony” as part of our shop maintenance. The swamp coolers are opened, the dirty filters are changed, the interior is cleaned, the pumps, motor and belts are checked, and the water is turned on. Things are repaired as needed.

It is a very clever system. Cool water wets the filters inside a box and a fan blows air in the cool and moist environment, which goes through a vent directly into the shop. There is minimal waste, as the water is recirculated and the motor is cheap to operate.

This system works very well in a dry desert environment, and it cools the building 15 - 20 degrees, which truly makes a difference.

With the upcoming heat, I am grateful for a cool shop and a bowl of ice cream.

Have a good Hump Day, folks!

Exactly six years ago today, my husband and best friend was called back to Heaven. Norm Nielsen and I shared twenty-five wonderful years together, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of him.

I miss him deeply. 😢

He loved simple things. His favorite b**r was a nice, cold Heineken in the evening after a good, productive day in the workshop.

Today, as I spend time with family and friends in Panama City, I couldn’t help but order one in his honor.

Until we meet again, Norm. ❤️🙏🏼

Happy Easter, my Facebook friends!

I wish you a blessed day full of renewal and new beginnings. Thank you, Jesus! ❤️🙏🏼 ✝️

I just realized that I haven’t posted anything on social media in a while. Frankly, I have been very busy in the last few weeks. I am attempting to make a batch of Okito-Nielsen Chinese Sticks, and working on other projects.

My daily tasks in the shop have been too boring and mundane. Thankfully, there has been no drama and no complications worth posting online .

However, I did make a little video of a repair I completed last week. I admire other builder friends like my dear friend Paul Lembo, who is the king of magic prop repairs. He has the patience of a saint with these tasks.

People don’t realize the time it takes to make a small repair on a prop. A client sent me the lid of a box that someone dropped and dented. From beginning to end, the repair took days to finish. I asked the client to send the dented lid. Luckily, the wood was not cut in any way. To fix dents, the trick is to expand the wood fibers. The lid already has finish in it, so I dipped the corner in water for 3 - 4 hours. The water slowly creeps into the wood expanding its fibers and restoring its shape. I then waited a day to let it dry, before I tackled the job of sanding and finishing the lid. The nearly two-minute video shows the process.

Have a great week folks! Stay well. ❤️🤗

I have been quite busy for the last couple of weeks. I have been finishing a small custom order (which took me longer than anticipated), and last night I finished cleaning the entire shop in order to “change gears” so to speak.

Today, I am starting to work on a batch of Okito-Nielsen Chinese Sticks, as there has been a demand for them.

I can no longer get the fabric for the bags in which they were packed, so I am using another material.

I am now running errands and purchasing the primer to be used on these. The picture shows the materials for the primer ONLY that I just purchased. This little box contains $265.14 worth of materials. I only purchased a quart of primer, the reducer and paint nozzles.

The sticker shock on all materials is real. The price of metals has almost tripled since the pandemic, nd the price of paint is prohibitive.

The above does not include the paint or the decals. The materials for the decals I make has quintupled in price, and it is difficult to get.

This is the new reality for all craftsmen and builders out there. Although I should be retiring, I admit that I do like what I do.

Have a great Hump Day folks!

Today is February 17, 2026. Today is Norm Nielsen’s birthday.

Happy Birthday, Norm!!! ❤️🤗🎁🎂🎈🥳

Not one day goes by that I don’t think of him. He enriched my life and made me a better human being. I am deeply grateful for that gift.

May God bless you always, Norm, wherever you are now. ❤️🙏🏼

This photo was taken in 2015, and it is of Norm (on the right front) with his lifelong friend Johnny Thompson (left). Johnny and Norm met in the early 1960s. They were from the Chicago area and they both shared a passion for magic. They collaborated in many ways and produced several magic effects that we still sell.

Johnny developed a comedy magic act and became known as one of the most knowledgeable experts in the field, becoming a consultant for some of the best known magicians in the world today. Norm developed a manipulative magic act, manufactured magic and later became a magic poster collector.

Good times! I miss them both. ❤️😢
