SYMBOLIC
My story of 9-11-2001
It was the spring of 1999. I was in Monument Valley, Utah on one of my several day photography excursions. It had been a long day of hiking and shooting and I was ready for a satisfying meal and some rest. Across from the restaurant was a gift shop. There were some posters on the wall, one of them an image of the shadow from the most westerly Mitten Butte being cast perfectly onto the twin east butte. I stared in disbelief and thought to myself, “That really happens? When?” I rushed outside to look at the Mitten Buttes which are in plain sight from the gift shop, but the sun had already set for the evening. The next morning I set out on a fact-finding mission. The indigenous people of the land, the Navajo, would surely know when this monumental event takes place. It had to be not only astronomical, but highly spiritual. I approached a Navajo park guide and asked, “When does the shadow from the one butte cast a shadow onto the other?” He shrugged and said, “I don’t know.” “Really?” So, I approached another and asked the same thing. Same answer - no one knew! I thought, “How odd. This would have to be akin to an eclipse of the sun in scope and spiritual importance.”Over the next two years, I made several trips to Monument Valley to observe the position of the sun for the perfect solar alignment that would reveal this phenomenon. In the spring and again in the fall of 2000 I made two trips to Europe which interrupted my sojourn to the twin towers of stone, But I was soon back on the quest. It was now late summer of 2001. I arrived at the park late in the afternoon and waited for the low sun to reveal the position of the shadow on the east butte. Excitement overcame me! There it was, on the butte, not quite centered but there! I knew it was only a matter of another day or so for the sun to “tick” imperceptibly to the south and align the shadow perfectly within the rust red sandstone butte. It’s important to note that when visiting the remote tribal park in the early 2000’s there was no cell service or internet to speak of so I was unaware of the terrible news that had transpired that morning. When I arrived back to the classic Mitten Butte vantage, after being afield all day, I proceeded to set up my equipment and captured the merging of two TWIN TOWERS of stone. It was 9-11-2001. The next morning I learned of the terrible news that changed our lives forever. Every year, on 9-11 these twin towers of stone symbolically merge, reminding us WE MUST NEVER FORGET!
