Cars used to flex. Now they just blend.
While the 1980s were famous for vibrant self expression, the car industry has since shifted into a more neutral era. In the 80s, roads were filled with bold greens, metallic golds, and even neon inspired teals that defined the aesthetic of the decade. By contrast, as of 2026, neutral colors continue to dominate the global market. White, black, gray, and silver now account for nearly 80% of all new cars produced. Bright colors like red and yellow are disappearing fast because they are often seen as risky for resale value, as most buyers prefer safer, universally liked tones. Although neon bright factory paint has nearly vanished, some enthusiasts are trying to shake up the monochrome crowd with custom finishes and two tone patterns.
