Fall is for Shrub Planting

Fall is here! It is time to actively promote to your retail garden center customers the advantages of planting trees and shrubs over the next three months. As we all know, most people plant trees, shrubs and ground covers in the spring, but fall is really the best time to plant. By planting in fall – September through mid-December – we take advantage of the great opportunity we have to get plants established. Root growth, which is the first priority after planting, occurs during fall and winter across the hardiness zones 7, 8 and 9. Plants added to the landscape in the fall will be well on their way to a “jump start” on spring performance. When planting, follow these procedures for optimal establishment:

– Begin by digging a hole at least twice as wide and to the same depth as the root ball of the plant you have.
– After digging, ensure that about 1 inch to 2 inches of the root ball is raised above the surrounding soil.
– Loosen with your hands or a knife any matted roots on the outside of the root ball. Also, cut through any circling roots. – Place the plant in the hole and fill in with the soil from the planting hole or landscape bed where it is being planted. – Water in the plant to provide moisture to any air pockets. – Mulch with 2-3 inches of pine straw or another recommended mulch after planting is completed.

A recent news article from the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association says “the benefits of a well-planned landscape are many, from providing shade, privacy and color, to correcting drainage problems and creating outdoor living areas. Beautiful landscaping increases the value of your home by as much as 20 percent, according to some estimates.”
