We’re excited to announce that The Kentucky Bookstore is one of the five independent bookstores participating in the Bluegrass Cozy Crawl, happening October 6 through November 28!

The crawl brings together 5 independent bookstores and 4 local coffee shops across the Bluegrass for a fall adventure built around books, coffee, small businesses, and exploring Kentucky.

KENTUCKY HAS A DARK SIDE… AND KEVEN McQUEEN HAS BEEN WRITING IT DOWN.

This week at The Kentucky Bookstore, we’re diving into the darker side of the Bluegrass because Kentucky author Keven McQueen will be here this Saturday!

True crime is taking center stage with Keven’s new release, True Tales of Murder and the Unexplained, filled with bizarre deaths, disturbing crimes, strange circumstances, and stories that prove truth can be a whole lot stranger than fiction.

But that’s only part of what you’ll find on our shelves.

We also carry a great selection of Keven’s other books, including stories involving historic crimes in Lexington and Louisville, strange Bluegrass tales, forgotten Kentucky history, ghostly lore, disasters, murder, mayhem, and some downright peculiar chapters from our Commonwealth’s past.

And THAT is exactly why we love supporting Kentucky authors.

KENTUCKY STORIES DESERVE SOME ROOM TO SHINE.

Moving our children’s books into their own new room did something pretty wonderful for the rest of The Kentucky Bookstore too…

It gave us a LOT more space to showcase what this store was built around:

Just look at these shelves.

Romance. Mystery. Fantasy. Historical fiction. Christian fiction. Contemporary stories. Appalachian voices. Nationally known Kentucky writers. Independent authors you may be discovering for the very first time.

And we’re still growing.

One of the things I love most about this bookstore is being able to put Kentucky writers right out front where people can find them, rather than letting their books disappear among thousands of others.

With Stave Fest happening in Downtown Lawrenceburg this weekend, this is a great time to come see what we’ve been working on.

And with Stave Fest happening right here in Downtown Lawrenceburg this week, this feels like the perfect time to show off one of the biggest sections at The Kentucky Bookstore.

A KENTUCKY SCANDAL… AND AN UNDERCOVER SPY?

Now THIS is the kind of history that makes you forget you’re reading nonfiction.

Alias Agnes: The Notorious Tale of a Gilded Age Spy by Elizabeth A. DeWolfe tells the true story of Jane Armstrong Tucker, a Boston stenographer who was hired for a secret mission and spent ten weeks undercover as “Agnes Parker.”

Her target? Madeleine Pollard, a Kentucky woman whose relationship with Kentucky Congressman William C. P. Breckinridge erupted into a scandal that captivated the country after Pollard sued him when he failed to fulfill his promise to marry her.

Secrets. Betrayal. Politics. Courtroom drama. Women trying to make their way in a world where the rules were very different for men.

And the wildest part?

It actually happened.

Published by the University Press of Kentucky, Alias Agnes digs into a fascinating piece of Gilded Age history and the women caught inside one of the era’s most sensational scandals.
