Update on Rhonda for those wondering:

She is still intubated and on ECMO at this time and there isn’t a set time they’re even giving at this point as to how long she will need the support of those machines. The doctors and her nurses said she’s going to have to stay sedated and probably medically paralyzed until her lungs are stronger. When they they take the paralytic off and reduce the sedative they can’t get her to stop trying to breathe over the vent no matter what they try. The cause of that is that there is still a lot of inflammation in her lungs from covid, when they take the paralytic off- her lungs kick into their natural instinct and go crazy and panic trying to get oxygen so she starts taking fast breaths over the ventilator. When she does that it messes with the machines that are trying to help her body.
Once her lungs are stronger and the inflammation goes down, it will be easier to take her off of the paralytic and to back off of the sedative. The nurses said that they have had people fully awake on a vent and ecmo, it’s just tricky getting them to that point where they can wake them up, but their body lets the machines do the work of her heart and lungs for her.
Good news is, her lungs are the only system that is currently failing. Typically when covid patients lose oxygen for a long period of time, like my mom did, other organ systems start to fail like liver, kidneys, and heart. Her kidneys took a pretty big hit in the beginning, but are repairing themselves really well.
Her body is definitely fighting like crazy, but her lungs are just being stubborn. Lots of prayers for healthy lungs are needed! At this point, that’s all we’re waiting for to move forward with any other treatment. 🙏 🫁 🙏
