Local Author Book Signing!
In the mid-1980s, when Col. R.C. Hartjen retired from the military, he had two dreams: become an Episcopal priest, and write historical Western novels.
He did both. He wrote three complete novels — longhand, on legal pads — and his wife Irene typed them up on an electric typewriter. But back then, publishing meant landing a literary agent, and Westerns weren't exactly in demand anymore. So the manuscripts sat. For almost 40 years.
A couple of years ago, Helen — Col. Hartjen's wife — asked his son Ray to get the handwritten manuscripts digitized, at least for the family. Ray retyped all three books himself from the handwritten pages. This September, nearly four decades later, those books are finally real.
Come meet Col. Hartjen and hear the story behind Cowhouse Creek Showdown, Last Stage from Cedar Station, and The Gold Stalkers — three novels, one family, and a dream that waited 40 years to come true.
📅 Book Signing — September 26

For most of his life, Jackie Chan believed his parents were exactly who they appeared to be — quiet, ordinary people. The truth turned out to be something closer to one of his own action movies.

One day, while his father Charles was driving him in the car, he suddenly turned to Jackie and said, "Son, I'm old. I might sleep and never wake up. I have a secret to tell you." What followed left Chan stunned: his father revealed he had actually been a spy, working for Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government during the Chinese Civil War in the 1930s and '40s, before fleeing to Hong Kong to escape the Communist takeover.

Then came an even bigger surprise — his mother, Lee-Lee, hadn't just been a quiet homemaker either. In Shanghai, she had smuggled o***m and built a reputation as a formidable underground gambler, all while raising two daughters on her own after her first husband was killed in a Japanese bombing raid.

Here's the twist that sounds like it belongs in a movie: Charles and Lee-Lee actually met when he arrested her for dealing o***m.

Even the family name wasn't what Jackie thought — his father revealed their real surname was Fong, not Chan.

Chan was so struck by the revelation that he commissioned a 2003 documentary, Traces of the Dragon: Jackie Chan and His Lost Family, to tell his parents' full story. "I was very shocked," he later admitted — and honestly, who wouldn't be, finding out in your 40s that your parents' love story started with a police arrest and a double life.

So, cute story of the day. A family who visits fairly often came in with their 5ish your old little boy today. He is in the mall just a few minutes when he heads behind the counter to visit Luna. She sits and gently pushes her head into his hands as he wraps his little arms around her neck and says. "I think you missed me too . I think you love me too".
I know, Shadow is smiling so big. She adored the kids who visited.
Luna is not yet 8 months old but truly following that trait!
Thank ypu to mom and dad for raising such a great kiddo!
