Julia Ansel is our featured First Friday Art Walk Artist for October. Not only is Julia a local artist, but she is also on the board of the Richland Library, which makes her near and dear to our hearts. The following is a little bit about Julia in her own words.

I am a local artist with no particular medium. Creativity is both a form of absorbing relaxation and an outlet to produce a finished project. I have enjoyed many forms of art since childhood and was lucky to explore several through my public high school. In fact, some of those pieces are displayed here.

I have been able to utilize my artistic streak in practical ways: making bulletin boards and posters for my classroom, birthday cards, painting pumpkins, arranging a shelf, and creating flyers. More importantly, the artistic process is a way for me to invest time in something I simply enjoy. In a world with many demands on our attention and time, I find making any form of art a way to return to myself and find joy. I think as a mom of young kids, a wife, and a small business owner, it is important to me to continue to invest in a pastime that simply has always made me happy.

Join us Friday October 2 for a special edition of First Friday Trivia starting at 6 pm, Banned Books Week is Oct 4-10. In honor of banned books week our trivia this month will be all about bringing light to this epidemic in our country. Join us for a night of fun facts it’s free to participate. Gather your team together, and enjoy some friendly completion.

Avast, me hearties! Tomorrow be Talk Like a Pyrate Day. We fine folx at The Haunted Whimsy do so love our piratical history, and to be addin’ a bit o’ whimsy to our day. We have all sort o bountiful treasures to add to thy plunder. For the wee ones we to have board books on up to mythical tales of the sea from many a far flung harbor. For the not so wee ones we have historical accounts of the actual pirates from “Black Sails” like, Calico Jack, Ann Bonny, and Mary Read, or if “Our Flag Means Death” is more to your liking, Blackbeard and “The Gentleman Pirate” himself Stede Bonnet. We also have glorious tales of adventure ranging from YA to dark and spicy romance. Of course, your piratical collection would not be complete without a book all about a pirates favorite drink, RUM!
In honor of all of the shipboard kittens that kept the pirate crew safe from the pesky rat vermin tomorrow also be International Meow Like A Pirate Day. Now that is a day worth celebrating. Meorrrrwww!!!
