Phyllis taught a class yesterday on the foodborne parasite outbreak that's been in the news this summer. The part that stuck with people wasn't an herb. It was a bowl of salty water.

She has washed every piece of produce she brings home the same way for decades. A bowl of water, a fat tablespoon of salt, fifteen minutes.

One time it was a cabbage out of her own garden. She pulled back the outer leaves and dropped it in. Ten minutes later, something floated to the top that she hadn't planted.

Q: I have poison ivy growing in my yard. What's the safest way to get rid of it?

Before reaching for the mower or pulling plants by hand, make sure you've correctly identified poison ivy. It can grow as a vine, shrub, or groundcover.

For small patches, carefully pull plants while wearing long sleeves, long pants, waterproof gloves, and closed-toe shoes. Dig out as much of the root system as possible and dispose of the plants in the trash.

Avoid mowing, string trimming or burning poison ivy. These methods can spread the plant's irritating oils and increase your risk of exposure.

If poison ivy is climbing a tree, cut the vine near the base and leave the upper portion attached to die naturally. Pulling vines from the tree can damage the bark and expose you to the plant's oils.
