Started a new furniture project this weekend for my daughter. She said she needed a nightstand so guess who designed one from scratch and milled all the materials from rough stock.

It’s got a few more items on the checklist to go before it is complete, but it’s looking pretty good thus far!

Hard Maple with a single drawer, tapered legs, and an undecided finish. Will round it out with broken edges, a light round over for the top, and soft close for the drawer pull. She’s going to love it, and I am loving the journey.

I will post the build shots, time lapse, and videos later this week.

new shop boom arm dust collection. This thing is awesome and reaches almost anywhere I need in my shop.

I got the idea of making this as I was going through some saved photos of ideas I wanted to work on at a later time and saving them into a common album for easy access. I came across a photo of this shop dust collection arm a friend sent me without any source. He asked me if I would be willing to make this for his shop. I never got the chance to do so, as he passed away before the holidays last year. I was shocked and devastated.

You see, Steven and his Wife took me in to their cabinet shop while I was between Nurse jobs and began mentoring me on my woodworking. He pushed me, taught me, and made me laugh. He told me he would help me get where I wanted to be in my woodworking business if I just gave him two years of listening to his advice. He gave me and sold me materials, equipment, and even donated the wood to make my grand babies crib out of. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met. I am going to miss him dearly.

So I get to making this and looking over one of the photos I was sent I saw the sign of the shop it came from just barely in the background of the photograph. I found him here on Instagram and reached out. was excited and flattered that I used his design. We chatted and have done a show and tell as I made a couple of modifications to mine.

I made this, not just for me, but as a tribute to my late friend Steven and his Wife Crystal. I think if them often and always with a smile. This will be a constant reminder.

Overnight build of our new floating entertainment center. Baltic Birch 3/4” ply. Still in progress, obviously, and deciding on stain and trim.

I sometimes do very rough drawings that I see in my head and go from there. Originally I was only going to to use pocket holes but decided to do some dados as well. Should prove to be very sturdy.

I have a lot of nice dark Sapele I think I will use for the face frame. I’m going to French cleat this on the wall below our TV and put in our electric fireplace in the lower opening.

Sad to say that sometimes things don’t go to plan…

Not because of my poor or improper planning, but as the fates have it, s**t just goes wrong. Then entire side of the shipping box was torn off.

This was one of my most recent sales. Perfect when it left, broken promises upon arrival.

I of course issued a full refund and refused the return of the item. I even went as far as told her how to repair it, or otherwise use the insert separately as a stand alone Tea Lamp. Stuff happens.

Good customer service goes a long way.

Here’s another out the door with a custom design!

This was a fun design to create and assemble.

Design time: 2 hours
Laser cut time: 60 minutes
Frame assembly: 15 minutes
Assembly: 30 minutes

There is more to it than just slapping something together. These are time consuming and very fragile, and at times frustrating to create to get the parts to not simply fall apart. The top on this particular lantern needed to be adjusted after the initial cut rendered the small parts too fragile to assemble. It all worked out in the end and the recipient loved it!
