Does adding a portable scrubber mean the OR's built-in filtration isn't good enough?

No. And that question is the source of a lot of unnecessary confusion on ASC and hospital projects.

Two different jobs, not one better version of the other:

The room's central air handling system runs continuously, is sized to ASHRAE 170 or FGI for that space, and maintains the room's pressure relationship to the corridor for every case scheduled that day.

A portable scrubber exists to solve a narrower, temporary problem: pulling down particulate load quickly in a specific space for a specific window. It doesn't touch the room's pressure relationship, and it isn't a replacement for the engineered system.

Where it goes wrong, both directions:
- Treating a scrubber as a workaround for air changes that were never independently verified
- Skipping a scrubber during construction or renovation because "the room already has HEPA"

Both mistakes look reasonable in the moment. Neither one holds up when someone actually checks.

Quick test: can you tell an air scrubber from a negative air machine on sight?

Most crews can't. They look alike, run the same HEPA media, and get quoted interchangeably in submittals. But they solve two different problems.

Air scrubber → recirculates filtered air back into the space. Reduces particulate. No pressure differential.

Negative air machine → exhausts filtered air outside the zone. Establishes and maintains negative pressure.

Same filter. Same 99.97 percent standard. Different job.

The mix-up matters most on Class III and IV projects, where the ICRA calls for a documented pressure differential, not just particulate control. A scrubber can run at full capacity and still leave the room at neutral or positive pressure relative to the corridor. That's a containment gap, not a labeling issue.
