Well here we are, another hunting season has started. Good luck to everyone this fall. If you happen to smack a trophy and would like the memory preserved, I’d be happy to do it for you.

Here are some tips to help preserve the hide so I can get you the best possible outcome in a mount.

- Get the hide off a quickly as possible and start cooling it down. Even laying it in the shade skin side up while you pack meat is a good idea.
- Do not salt it, unless you know how to do it to completion.
- Get the hide on ice and frozen as quickly as possible. Even once we get to November and it may be freezing overnight. There is no replacement for freezer frozen. Anything else can and will likely ruin the cape.
- DO NOT, please, do not cut the brisket or arm pits!
- If you think you have enough hide for a shoulder mount, take more. Cut well past the shoulder crease.
- You do not have to cape the head out if you’re not comfortable. It’ll be ok if you can get it into a cooler on ice relatively quickly.
- Tube out the legs if you can. And again, do not cut up into the armpits.
- Only cut straight up the back along the spine.

Happy Hunting. Be safe, be respectful, and send it!

This past weekend I participated in the South Dakota Taxidermist Association convention. I entered my first two mounts into the Professional Division with an effort and goal of learning from the higher level judging.
I was very pleased to have received a 3rd place for each piece!
It was a wonderful event. The seminars, people, and information shared was incredible. I gained so much that I am excited to bring back into my next pieces.
Thank you to all who encouraged me and gave such great constructive criticism and critiques!! I am very grateful, and I am very proud of how I did.

I just finished up this wall pedestal pronghorn mount.
It was a bit more of a challenge than your standard. The horns and skull cap were 25+ years old and the cape was a replacement. I ended up having to rebuild some of the horn bases.
With all that, I’m really happy with how it turned out. I hope you think so too.
is going to have a full trophy room!
