The Besom
More Than a Witch’s Broom
Long before it became the symbol of the witch soaring beneath the moon, the besom was a sacred tool of home, hearth, and spirit. It was never just a broom it was a guardian of the threshold, a keeper of peace, and a reminder that every act of cleansing begins with intention.
The word besom comes from the Old English word for a bundle of twigs. Traditionally, a besom was handcrafted from a sturdy wooden handle bound with branches of birch, broom, heather, or willow. Every tree carried its own wisdom, making each besom as unique as the witch who crafted it. (Etymology Online)
In the Craft, the besom is used to sweep away stagnant, unwanted, or heavy energy before ritual. Unlike ordinary cleaning, the bristles often never touch the floor. Instead, the besom is passed just above the ground, symbolically clearing the space and preparing it for sacred work. The true magic lies not in the sweeping, but in the intention behind it. (Llewellyn)
The handle is often seen as representing the masculine principle, while the brush symbolizes the feminine. Bound together, they become a symbol of balance, creation, and harmony. This is one reason the besom has long been used in handfasting ceremonies, where couples “jump the broom” to mark the beginning of a new life together. (Witches Of The Craft®)
Many witches keep a besom near the front door, not as decoration, but as a quiet guardian. It is believed to help discourage unwanted energies from entering while reminding all who cross the threshold that the home is sacred.
The stories of witches flying on besoms are woven from centuries of folklore, misunderstanding, and imagination. While those tales became part of popular legend, the real magic of the besom has always been much closer to the earth. It is found in the simple act of sweeping away yesterday’s burdens to make room for tomorrow’s blessings. (HISTORY)
A besom reminds us that before we can invite in abundance, peace, or joy, we must first clear a path for them to enter.
