These beauties are banded green onyx large tumbles. Banded green onyx is a popular decorative stone that is actually a trade name for green calcite or banded limestone, rather than true silicate onyx. It features striking layers of light mint, dark forest green, white, and amber.

What It Is Geologically

True Onyx: A cryptocrystalline form of quartz (chalcedony) with parallel, flat black-and-white or stark contrasting bands.

Banded Green "Onyx": A soft carbonate mineral (calcite) formed by mineral deposits in limestone caves and springs.

The Vinegar Test: Real quartz/chalcedony does not react to acid, but because banded green onyx is calcite, a drop of vinegar will cause it to gently fizz.

Uses and Properties

Home Decor: Carved frequently into decorative pyramids, spheres, hearts, bowls, and candle holders due to its translucency and polish.

Metaphysical Beliefs: Believed in crystal healing communities to connect with the heart chakra, reduce stress, provide grounding energy, and invite good fortune.

Care Note: Calcite has a low hardness (around 3 on the Mohs scale) compared to true quartz (7), meaning it can scratch easily and should be kept away from harsh acids or excessive water.

Aren't these agate slices cool? Agate is a common rock made of banded chalcedony, a type of quartz. It has colorful stripes or layers. The name comes from the Achates River in Sicily. People use agate for jewelry, carved items, and as a symbolic grounding stone for balance and protection.

Scientific Meaning

Mineral type: A form of fibrous chalcedony and quartz.
Appearance: Shows curved or parallel colored bands.
Formation: Grows inside volcanic or sedimentary rocks from liquid with silica.
Hardness: Scores 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

These are petrified wood large tumbles. Petrified wood is a type of fossil. It forms when buried plant material is completely replaced by minerals, usually quartz, chalcedony, or opal, over millions of years. This process maintains the tree's original three-dimensional structure, including microscopic cell walls, growth rings, and bark textures.

How Petrified Wood Forms

Rapid Burial: A fallen tree is quickly covered by sediment, mud, or volcanic ash, which keeps oxygen out and slows down the normal rotting process.

Mineral-Rich Water: Water carrying dissolved silica and other minerals flows through the sediment and seeps into the wood's pores.

Cell Replacement: As the original organic wood tissue slowly decays, minerals crystallize inside the empty spaces and replace the cell walls molecule by molecule.

Colors and Appearance

Trace Minerals: The vibrant reds, yellows, oranges, blacks, greens, or purples visible in polished specimens come from tiny amounts of other elements mixed into the silica.

Iron Oxides: Produce reds, browns, and yellows.

Carbon or Cobalt: Create dark black or blue hues.

Manganese: Adds pink or purple shades.

Uses and Characteristics

Hardness: Because it turns to quartz, petrified wood rates around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it as hard as normal stone or granite.

Applications: It is widely used by lapidary artists to make jewelry, bookends, tabletops, decorative display pieces, and luxury home items.
