Doing schoolwork at home and homeschooling are not automatically the same thing.

A child may spend every school day at the kitchen table and still be enrolled in an online public school, online charter school, hybrid program, or another school-directed program.

The easiest way to understand the difference is to stop focusing only on where the learning happens.

Instead, ask:

Who is the student enrolled with?
Who chooses the curriculum?
Who sets the requirements?
Who provides the academic direction and oversight?

If the school is still providing and directing the educational program, moving the student from a classroom to the kitchen table does not necessarily change who is responsible for the education.

Location and educational direction are two different things.

Your child can do 100% of their schoolwork at home…and still not be homeschooled.

That distinction surprises a lot of parents.

Imagine a student enrolled in an online public or charter school. They sit at the kitchen table, open their laptop, and complete every assignment from home.

They’re definitely learning at home.

But if the school provides the curriculum, teachers, assignments, requirements, and oversight, the school is still directing the education.

The same idea applies to remote school days and many hybrid programs.

So when you’re trying to understand whether something is actually homeschooling, don’t start with:

“Does my child learn at home?”

Start here instead:

Who is my child enrolled with?
Who chooses the curriculum?
Who sets the requirements?
Who is ultimately responsible for directing the education?

The location tells you where learning happens.

It doesn’t always tell you what kind of education your child is enrolled in.

And because legal definitions vary by state, always check the requirements where you live.

One of the quickest ways to overwhelm a homeschool mom is to make her believe she has to become the expert in every subject.

You don’t.

You can bring other people and resources into your homeschool without giving up your role as the person directing it.

Maybe someone else teaches algebra.

Maybe your child takes science through a co-op.

Maybe an online instructor handles a subject you don’t enjoy teaching.

Maybe Grandma teaches baking and Grandpa teaches woodworking.

Getting help is not the opposite of homeschooling.

The bigger question is whether you are still making the decisions about how those pieces fit into your child’s education.

You are allowed to build a homeschool around your child’s needs and your own strengths.

You do not have to personally teach every lesson for your child to be homeschooled.

That misconception puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on parents.

A homeschool family might use textbooks for one subject, an online course for another, a tutor for math, a co-op for science, and community classes throughout the week.

The question isn’t:
“Did Mom teach every lesson?”

The better question is:
“Who is directing the education?”

When the parent or family has primary responsibility for choosing the curriculum, resources, pace, schedule, and overall educational plan, homeschooling can take many different forms.

That flexibility is exactly why one family’s homeschool may look nothing like another’s.

And remember: legal requirements vary by state, so always check the rules where you live.

Homeschool families can use textbooks, tutors, online classes, co-ops, community programs, educational videos, dual credit - or a combination of all of them.

So what actually makes it homeschooling?

The family is taking primary responsibility for directing the child’s education.

That means deciding what resources to use, how quickly to move, what the schedule looks like, where outside help fits in, and how everything works together for your child and your family.

That’s also why one homeschool can look completely different from another.

Structured or flexible.
Mostly at home or constantly out at classes.

There isn’t one picture of homeschooling.

It’s less about where the learning happens and more about who is directing it.

And because homeschool laws vary by state, always make sure you understand the requirements where you live. 🤍

“Hybrid school” can sound straightforward… until you realize how many completely different programs use that label.

A university-model school typically combines campus days with home days. Teachers handle the main instruction and academic direction, while parents support students with their assigned work at home.

That can give families a valuable mix of structure, community, flexibility, and more time together.

But here’s the part to understand before assuming what category a program falls into:

University-model describes the structure of the week - not automatically the legal category of the school.

So when you’re comparing programs, go beyond the word “hybrid.”

Ask who your child is enrolled with, who controls the curriculum, and who is ultimately responsible for directing the education.

Those answers will tell you far more than the marketing label.

TheSchool three days a week. Home two days a week.

So…is that homeschool? Hybrid school? Private school? 🤔

This is exactly why the labels can get confusing.

A university-model school generally combines on-campus instruction with schoolwork completed at home. Teachers typically lead the curriculum and instruction, while parents support students on their home days.

For some families, that combination offers a really appealing balance of structure, community, and additional time at home.

But here’s the distinction people often miss:

“University-model” describes how the week is structured. It doesn’t automatically tell you the school’s legal category.

And “hybrid” can describe several very different setups.

So before choosing a program based on the label alone, ask:

Who is my child enrolled with?
Who chooses the curriculum?
Who sets the academic requirements?
Who is ultimately directing the education?

Those answers will tell you far more than the word hybrid ever will.
