National Silent E Day on September 29 recognizes the small but powerful letter that quietly transforms the words we read and write--the letter e. Though silent, this little letter has a big impact on English spelling and pronunciation.
The silent letter e is found at the end of countless English words. The letter may be silent and quiet most of the time, but it is a mighty letter to be reckoned with. It is a mighty letter that plays an important role in our language. This little letter performs several crucial functions that change how a word sounds, looks, and even functions. Here’s a glimpse of what this letter can do!
The Humble Powerful Silent E
The Change Maker: Change the vowel sound. Add an E to the end of a word, and the vowel before it often turns from a short vowel to a long vowel. (cap-cape)
V's Best Friend: No words in English end with a v. The letter e steps in to keep the v company. (have)
Nice and Gentle: When e follows c or g, it softens the sound. Instead of a hard c (cat), you hear a soft c (peace)
No Suffix Here: When an s appears at the end of a word, it often works as a suffix--as in cats (plural) or tags (action). The silent e helps signal that the s is simply part of the word.
Together We Giggle: Every syllable must have both a written vowel and a vowel sound. The e gives the syllable its written vowel.
