Now THAT’S a pinecone! 👀🌲

These Oregon sugar pinecones measure a whopping 10–12 inches long—nothing like the ones we find here in Southern Maryland! Coated with sunflower hearts, peanuts, golden safflower and more, these new arrivals serve up quite a feast for your feathered friends.

Brian, one of our Lexington Park team members, put one to the test in his own yard, and the birds wasted no time giving it their approval! In just a couple of days, a wonderful variety of birds stopped by for a bite. He captured the action in this video so you can see for yourself! 🐦🎥

Stop by Wild Birds Unlimited in Lexington Park or La Plata and pick up a BIG treat for your backyard birds!

Our gourds have landed in Lexington Park! 🍂🐦

Handpainted and signed by Amish women in Lancaster, PA, these beautiful gourds offer birds bluebird-size and smaller a sheltered spot to tuck in during the chilly nights that will soon be upon us.

Each one has its own personality, and Barb was very particular about choosing which ones came home with us. Just ask Chip! 😉

Stop by Wild Birds Unlimited Lexington Park to pick your favorite. They make thoughtful gifts for the bird lovers on your list, too! 🎁

We start feeding the birds because we love them.♥️

We keep feeding them because of who they help us become.🤞

Somewhere between filling the hopper and waiting by the window, the noise fades. You become a little more patient. A little more observant. A lot more grounded.

In a hurried world, birds teach us how to slow down, share space, and stay curious.

Fill a feeder today...not just to nourish your backyard visitors, but to bring a little calm to your own day. 🌿

I try to spend a few minutes watching the birds each morning to start my day with a little happiness!

Want to try something new with that pumpkin…turn it into a bird feeder! 🎃🐦

Try cutting it in half, scooping out some of the flesh, and using the pumpkin as a natural little feeding tray. Leave some of the pumpkin seeds inside or add your usual bird seed and see who comes to investigate!

A few things to remember:
🎃 Keep it natural. No paint, glitter, bleach, wax or other decorations that could be harmful to wildlife.
🐦 Put it somewhere birds already feel comfortable feeding. A sturdy platform, deck railing or protected spot in the yard can work well.
👀 Don't be surprised by other visitors! Squirrels and other backyard wildlife may be just as interested as the birds.
🚮 Know when to toss it. Once the pumpkin becomes soft, rotten or moldy, remove it and compost it if you can.

It's a fun way to get one more use out of your fall pumpkins and you might get some pretty entertaining backyard visitors in the process!

Has anyone tried a pumpkin feeder before? We'd love to see your pictures! 🎃🐦

Apparently, SOMEONE was left out of the whisper chain… 💙😂

JayJay JUST found out the big secret, and judging by his reaction, he’ll be hitting the peanuts pretty hard tonight! 🥜🎉

For those who haven’t heard, Jim Carpenter, founder of Wild Birds Unlimited, is coming to Southern Maryland! He’ll be speaking and signing the second edition of his book, The Joy of Bird Feeding!

📍 Lexington Park — November 16
Talk: 3–3:30 PM
Book signing: 3:30–6:30 PM

📍 La Plata — November 17

The windows in our homes and offices can be hazardous for birds. Birds cannot readily distinguish the presence of a pane of transparent glass from an unobstructed space or passageway and often fly into window panes causing injury or death. Click here to learn more: www.wbu.com/window-strikes

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Day of Autumn is Tuesday, September 22. That's when the length of day and night are almost the same. Be sure your feeders are ready for some hungry birds that are either preparing or recharging for the longer nights.

The Blue Jay shown is an example of a North American bird working hard to find the additional calories needed to make it through autumn's longer hours of darkness. Which birds are visiting your backyard this season? Share in the comments.
