Well, here we are, America's 250th birthday.

As a child who grew up reading American history biographies before bed, days like these bring a lot of confusing emotions.

When I was young and read Marin Luther King Jr.'s biography, I thought that we all believed in his dream.

When I read about
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Amelia Earhart, Ruth Bader Ginsburg... I believed women had come into our power- I never imagined we would be fighting for bodily rights.

I read about Teddy Roosevelt and Rachel Carson, and I believed we all saw the beauty of this land and wanted it to be preserved.

I read about Clara Barton and Marie Curie and I thought we all believed in the power of science and medicine.

I read about people coming to America on boats, and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time, and I thought we all believed in what was carved at her feet- "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..."

When I went to college, I minored in American History where I took a deeper dive into the harder parts of our past. But still, I saw a pattern of people fighting for what was right, a country where, slowly and intentionally, human rights won.

I found myself tearing up on the last day of my Civil War class- overwhelmed by how violently we had torn ourselves apart, yet somehow, we sewed ourselves back together. I saw both the blood and the love on the tapestry of America that led to me sitting in a multi-gender, multi-racial classroom while an African American man was president.

So today, I have complicated feelings. As I would have had celebrating our country under slavery, or before women could vote, when we put Japanese citizens in internment camps, or when boys were being drafted to die in Vietnam.

The truth is, America has always been complicated. But through resistance, we have continued to overcome. We were founded on fighting power and big money- and that rebellion created the country I grew up reading about. We have always been speaking truth to power, protesting injustice, and rising against tyranny. This country, in all of its mess, is still one I love and believe in, because at the end of the day, I can't help but believe in us.

Happy 4th of July weekend to all of you, and all of us. Celebrate our tapestry. Some years are darker than others, but the overall picture is pretty damn beautiful
