Today is the 9th. One month without Tawanda.
I’m wearing Tawanda’s Black Yogi Magic shirt; her first prototype. And she would often wear my Black Girls Do Yoga sweatshirt. We would think it was so funny that even though we had the EXACT same print provider, we were always wearing the other one’s products! 😂
Tawanda changed my life in so many ways. She is the one who got me started on my yoga journey. One day in June of 2020, I randomly had a thought that I wanted to get certified. The next day, Tawanda told me she found out about a scholarship through - free yoga teacher trainings for Black people who want to be yoga teachers! The timing was divine. And our world hasn’t been the same since that day.
Over the past month, I have been thinking about how to keep Tawanda’s legacy active; she did so much work to make yoga accessible; I won’t let that go in vain. So, on the one month anniversary of her passing, I have 2 announcements:
💗 The YTT changed our lives; I know Tawanda would want to share that gift. I will be awarding two (2) free scholarships for a 200-hour online yoga and meditation teacher training from our studio, My Vinyasa Practice. The cost of a normal yoga teacher training can be prohibitive to so many; I want to release that possible burden. The scholarship will be available to any Black women who are not currently enrolled in a training. The application will go live on my website by the end of the month; the two winners will be decided by the end of February.
💜 Your Yoga Homegirls was the union of me and Tawanda - our space to bring other people who have traditionally felt excluded from yoga together. We dreamed to expand it; so we will be expanding - into a non-profit. Your Yoga Homegirls will continue its focus with bringing marginalized people to the center of wellness and healing. This will be a long-term endeavor. Lots of paperwork, planning, a board of directors, and more. But Tawanda’s life will prayerfully change the lives of so, so many more.
As you can see, Tawanda’s light continues. I can’t wait to start this next journey. 💕💜
