Happy Birthday to poet and former Schomburg Society chair Sonia Sanchez! In 2024, Janus Adams (journalist and author, Sister Days: 365 Inspired Moments in African American Women’s History), Dr. Joanne Veal Gabbin (founder of Furious Flower Poetry Center), Mungu and Morani Sanchez (Sanchez’s sons) along with Schomburg Center Director Joy L. Bivins celebrated her 90th birthday at the Schomburg Center. https://ow.ly/JU9b50ZL2IZ

Program highlights included tributes from poet Ras Baraka, poet and author Haki R. Madhubuti (Tough Notes: A Healing Call for Creating Exceptional Black Men), author Ta-Nehisi Coates (Between the World and Me), and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Jericho Brown (The Tradition). Abiodun Oyewole (The Last Poets) and his drummer, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Craig Harris (trombonist) gave musical performances.
