Lee Sauder will be featured for the month of October in a collection of iron new and existing work never previously exhibited. The opening reception is on Friday, Oct. 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Artists in Cahoots.
Sauder who has been a professional blacksmith for 47 years applies his talents as a musician to his work. He begins with a broad concept then follows the direction that the supple, red hot, wrought iron takes and—making visual and rhythmic decisions along the way—forges the iron until the sculpture finds its own ending.
He works from a blacksmith shop located on his property near Collierstown. Here, Sauder practices “green smithing” through a technique of bloomery smelting. He maintains a carbon ledger in which he measures and tracks the carbon consumption and offsets produced in his own shop.
Sauder is also a prolific researcher about metallurgy and smelting. He has contributed to and published papers from proceedings for the Historical Metallurgy Society (HMS). He provides detailed ‘shop reports’ on his website to help others learn about the science and art of bloomery smelting and forging. He is well known for his functional pieces that range from cheese knives to bowls, hooks, and bottle openers. The fine art of forging comes through in his sculptures which range in size from 15” – 60” tall, sometimes more.
Sauder has been a member of Artist in Cahoots since its inception over forty years ago. In fact, he came up with the name for what has become Virginia’s oldest artist cooperative. His wife, Elizabeth, is also a professional artist and member of the cooperative.
