This may be the most outstanding groundcover that you've never heard of, until now; it's a Kentucky native, commonly called Seersucker sedge, Plantain-leaved sedge, or Carex Plantaginea. Its best quality may be that it is evergreen and keeps this bright green color all year, despite ice, deep snow, high temperatures, or anything else that nature throws at it. Unlike many commonly used groundcovers, this one isn't invasive! The clump expands politely, so it will never create a problem. Unlike liriope and other lookalikes, the leaves on this plant never need to be cut back (and should never be); those pretty, long leaves offer shelter for birds and small mammals year-round. The tiny, dark seedheads add a little texture and are eaten by songbirds and ground feeding birds. Seersucker sedge is about as hassle-free as any plant known to us, and as perfect as any groundcover we've seen. We have them in gallon pots; and if you'd rather have plugs, talk to us about ordering them by the flat. ALL NATIVES (flowers, trees, shrubs, vines) ON SALE FOR 40% OFF (excluding special orders).

Aside from their whimsical charm and our bygone memories of chasing them through the air in yards filled with them, Fireflies (aka Lightning Bugs) are actually beneficial for your yard and garden. Their larvae feast on snails and slugs (so you definitely want them in your Hosta beds!), earthworms, dead animals, and organic material. The adults primarily eat pollen or nectar (and do some pollinating in the process) and occasionally small insects. Some adults don't eat at all, because during their short lives, all of their attention is focused on summer evenings of amore by flashing their dazzling, little tails at one another. Like so many other beneficial creatures, Firefly numbers are declining due to pesticide use and loss of habitat, both of which can be avoided by eliminating your use of outdoor insecticides, and making simple changes like leaving your leaves, adding native trees, shrubs, and other vegetation (we can help!), and avoiding lawn chemicals.
