History Established in 1960. After WW2, our founder George P Hurst moved down from his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA to work at Shackleton's Music in Lexington, KY where he was in charge of the band & orchestra department. The business grew and soon moved to a new location on 660 E. During the mid 1980's, Hurst Music was purchased by Mel Owen Music, a music retailer in Louisville. Later, Dan Eberlein, a retired band director, purchased Hurst Music. Following Dan's passing in the mid-nineties, his wife, Dwana, (now Dwana Stevens) took over the business. Hurst Music has since become one of the premier school service dealers in Central Kentucky and moved to the current location on Mount Tabor Road, in order to meet this increased service demand. George Hurst's legacy has continued through the years because the mission at Hurst Music has always been to provide the finest quality products, repairs, and service possible.

Exciting news! Our 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra has been selected to perform at the 2027 Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) State Conference! This is an incredible honor and one of the highest achievements a school ensemble can earn in the state. The audition process includes submitting sound recordings that are then evaluated and adjudicated by a blind panel of judges. Many talented ensembles apply, but only a select few are chosen to play. We are so proud of the hardworking, dedicated young musicians in the EJ Hayes Orchestra, and commend them on this tremendous accolade! Congratulations!

All of us at Hurst Music are saddened to hear about the passing of our friend and fellow musician, Dr. Joseph Ceo.

Joe was a dear friend and teacher to many in the Lexington music community. From 1966 until 1973, he led the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, and had a very successful organization during his tenure on the podium.

Together with our dear friend Carroll Hall, he started the string orchestra program at Woodford County schools; which is still flourishing today.

Joe left Lexington to pursue his education, eventually earning a professorship and making a career as a violinist and violist for many years across multiple states.

When he returned to Lexington in 2015, he began teaching at Hurst in our Private Lesson Studio. From 2015 until 2024, Joe held recitals here, allowing his students to showcase the talents and skills they had learned.

We all grew close to Joe from his time spent in the store and in our community. We send our love to his wife, Suzanne, as well as his family and friends he made during his life spent spreading the joy of music.
