𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 all t𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲. 👀
There. We said it. 😜

We recently had a client choose a solid-surface shower pan instead of a tiled one for a pretty simple reason: 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵.

And for her, that was the right choice.

There are plenty of reasons to love a fully tiled shower, but not every bathroom - or every homeowner - needs the same solution. In a secondary bathroom, a rental, or simply a home where low maintenance is a priority, a quality solid-surface option may make more sense.

And we'd say this one still turned out pretty amazing. 😍

Part of our job isn't just showing you what's possible. It's helping you weigh the pros and cons and choose what actually makes sense for the way you live in your home.

Because the "best" option isn't always the same for everyone.

𝟮𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿. 🇺🇸

Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001.

Today, we remember the lives that were lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless families whose lives were forever changed that day.

We also remember the courage, sacrifice and incredible sense of unity that followed.

This weekend, Kyle and Ethan are in New York City with their friend Ben, a Toledo firefighter, to take part in the 9/11 25th Anniversary GORUCK event weekend.

Together, they're taking on the full weekend of events: a 24-hour Heavy Challenge, followed by the 10–12 hour Tough Challenge and finishing with the 4–5 hour Basic Challenge.

The video we're sharing is from a previous 9/11 GORUCK event and gives a glimpse into what they'll be taking on this weekend.

It's an incredibly difficult undertaking, but one they've chosen for a much bigger reason: 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

Today, and throughout this weekend, we're thinking of the victims and their families, the first responders, and all those whose lives were forever changed by September 11.

Sometimes craftsmanship is about more than installing what's on the plan...

On a recent project, our foreman Jesse worked with the homeowners on a tile layout they weren't completely sold on at first. He walked them through why he recommended changing the pattern and helped them understand how it would work in their space.

Then came the ex*****on.

Using a laser throughout the installation, Jesse carefully set each tile so the pattern stayed square and consistent across the entire layout - including maintaining a 1/16-inch gap across the entire floor. 🤯

That's a pretty small margin for error, especially when you're carrying those lines across a large space.

By the final walkthrough, the homeowners told us the tile pattern they had originally been unsure about had become one of their favorite parts of the project.

Great craftsmanship matters. But so does having someone on your project who can explain the why, help you make decisions with confidence, and then take the time to execute them well.

A Friday night at the ballpark with some of our favorite people! ⚾️

A big thank you to Waterhouse bath & kitchen studio / Maumee Supply for generously providing Mud Hens tickets for our team! Several of our team members were able to bring their families along and enjoy a night together at the ballpark.

(Many team members not pictured because, as it turns out, they’re much better at laying floors than documenting events. 🤣)

Any time we get to step away from the job sites and spend time together - especially with our families included - is time well spent.

We’re so thankful for the generosity of Waterhouse/Maumee Supply and for a fun night together! ❤️⚾️

Your floors aren't always level.

Your cabinets still need to be. 👏

Especially in older homes, it's pretty common for floors to have some slope or variation. And while you might not notice it walking through the room, it matters quite a bit when you're installing cabinets and countertops.

If the cabinets aren't level, everything that comes after them can be affected - countertops, doors, drawers, appliances and how everything lines up across the room.

So what do we do when the floor isn't level?

There are a couple of options.

One is using self-leveler to create a level surface across the floor.

Another, and sometimes more cost-effective, option is to level the cabinets themselves using shims.

That's what you're seeing here. 👇

The shims allow us to get the cabinets level even when the floor underneath them isn't. They'll eventually be trimmed, and the baseboard will cover everything you're seeing at the bottom.

But there's also a point where an unlevel floor becomes more than a cabinet-installation problem.

If a floor is significantly out of level, enough that it would require a substantial amount of self-leveler to correct, we need to look at 𝘄𝗵𝘆.

In some cases, adjustments may need to be made to the structure underneath the floor, whether that's in a basement or crawl space. There could also be a larger structural issue that needs to be addressed before we're thinking about setting cabinets at all.

It's a good example of something we run into pretty often in remodeling:

Sometimes the solution is a few shims.
Sometimes what you can see is telling us we need to take a closer look at what you can't. 👀

Choosing a contractor to work in your home is a big decision, and we know there can be a lot of uncertainty that comes with it.

So when a customer says 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 after we've finished their project, it means a whole lot to us. 🤍

The beautiful finished bathroom is pretty great, too - but the words about our communication, planning and the care our team put into the process? That's the part we're most proud of.

What HGTV doesn't show you about rearranging an entire bathroom... 😂

“Can’t we just move the toilet over there?”

Well… maybe.

On TV, the toilet was here, the shower was there, the vanity was on the other side of the room, and by the end of the 60 minute show, everything is in a completely different spot.

In real life, there’s a little more happening underneath the floor. 🫠

Moving a toilet a few feet might seem pretty simple, but the drain underneath it still has to get from point A to point B - and it needs enough room and the proper slope to do it.

Which way the floor joists run matters. Where the main plumbing stack is matters. What’s underneath the bathroom matters. And sometimes the exact spot that makes the most sense on paper would mean cutting through something structural that we absolutely don’t want to cut through.

Sometimes moving a toilet three feet really is pretty straightforward.

Other times, those same three feet can add a lot more work {and cost} to the project.

It doesn’t mean you can’t completely rearrange your bathroom. Sometimes changing the layout is 100% worth it.

But sometimes homeowners are surprised by how much it can cost to move something just a few feet. What looks like a small change on the surface can mean a whole lot more work underneath it.

That’s the part HGTV can’t always fit between commercial breaks. 😂

And sometimes keeping that toilet right where it is leaves a whole lot more room in the budget for the things you’ll actually see.
