25 years later, and I can still remember it like it happened yesterday.
I was 6 years old, getting ready for school that morning when my uncle came over in a hurry and told us to turn on the TV. At that point, the first tower had already been hit.
I sat there watching, just a 6 year old kid in first grade, trying to understand what I was seeing on that television.
Then I watched the second plane hit.
I remember the scrambling of jets from Wright Patterson Air Force Base. I remember the panic in my dad, my uncle, and my grandpa. Even now, those memories still send chills down my spine.
I was only 6 years old, but that day left an impact on me that will last a lifetime.
As I grew older, those memories never really left me. In many ways, September 11th became one of the things that pushed me toward joining the military. I wanted to serve my country. I wanted to do my part. I wanted to stand up for the country I watched come together on one of the darkest days in American history.
Every year, I pray for the families who lost loved ones. I watch the documentaries. I remember the stories. I remember the heroes. I remember the lives that were lost and the families whose lives were changed forever.
September 11, 2001 wasn’t just a date in history. It was a day that changed America forever.
We as Americans made a promise.
NEVER FORGET.
Never forget the 2,977 innocent people who never made it home.
Never forget the firefighters, police officers, first responders, military members, and ordinary Americans who ran toward danger while others were running away.
Never forget the families who still feel that loss every single day.
And never forget what it felt like to be an American on that day.
I was 6 years old when I watched it happen.
I grew up carrying those memories with me.
And eventually, those memories helped lead me to serve this country myself.
25 years later, I still remember.
I still pray.
I still watch.
I still honor them.
And I will always remember.
