UPDATE: patient has cleared her health assessment and is being placed on a waiting list with Duke Hospital but no telling how long that will take to reach her. Patient blood type is A+, so anyone with blood types A+, A-, O+, O- could be considered for a match.
If an act of kindness could save a strangers life, would any of you be willing to help?
I recently met a beautiful angel. Her voice was soft and kind, her body frail and weak, and her wings broken far too many times. Her skin was pale yellow and the whites of her eyes no longer white but deep yellow. Before me stood a woman whom I had never met that wanted to volunteer to help with our children’s store monthly free clothing giveaway. I was actually baffled, I had always been the one to give… working late to organize and hang clothing, paying additional staff for that busy day only so that I could give the items away in hopes that it would help families. But here she was, clearly sick, asking to be able to help and give back to our community as well. My first thought was that she could barely stand, her movements slow, her balance unsteady, but if she was wanting to give her time to a good cause I would certainly find something she could do.
As I have gotten to know her more, my heart has completely broken for her and her family. Several years ago she was married, her husband a Pastor and she, an emergency room nurse. While at work, her husband was at home caring for their two young daughters and suddenly her very own infant was rushed into the emergency room. The baby had been violently shaken, causing permanent brain damage and paralysis. Her world was shaken to its core, her usually kind and loving husband, in a brief moment of frustration, had lost his temper with his crying baby girl. An act he could never undo, an act he could never forgive himself for. Overwhelmed with grief and guilt of his actions, he took his own life. In one harsh moment, this woman had lost her husband and her healthy baby girl that is now disabled for the rest of her life. As a single mother, she has done everything a loving mother could do for her, but her time of being able to care for her daughter is running out. Her time will run out if I can’t find a second angel. I’m a problem solver, and this sad story does have a solution. My beautiful yellowing angel needs a liver transplant because she has liver cancer. I researched liver transplants to have a better understanding of what was needed. I was surprised to learn that a healthy living person can donate half of their liver and it will regenerate itself back to full size in less than 3 months! My hopes of myself being a match for her were quickly dissolved as I was told I could not be a donor due to having diabetes and high blood pressure.
I understand this would not be an option for many due to numerous reasons. But I ask your prayers for her and please share her story in hopes of someone willing to save her life by being tested and matched as a liver donor.
