A bit of interesting info on gourds and pumpkins:

Gourds are the hard-shelled fruit that grow on the vines of a variety of plants especially of the Lagenaria siceriaria, which is related to melons, squash, and pumpkins. Indigenous peoples used the shells of gourds for storage, utensils, rattles, and musical instruments. The decoration of gourds was an ancient tradition in Africa and Asia as well as the peoples of the Americas, including the Navajo, the Pueblo, and the Hopi nations of the American Southwest. The technique used was called pyrography. Modern day gourd art has evolved to include the use of paints, wood burning tools, and electric carving tools yielding an unending variety of styles, techniques, and designs.
A kin fruit, the pumpkin, has come to be associated with Thanksgiving coming from the 1620’s when the Pilgrims came to the Americas. It is likely that the Pilgrims and the indigenous people ate pumpkins frequently and it was likely apart of the early Thanksgiving feasts. It became popularized by the colonists. There is even a recipe for a pumpkin pie in a French cookbook dating back to 1653. (Thanks to Wikipedia for the above information.)

Artist Karla Mock takes interesting stones and turns them into stunning pieces of jewelry. We are pleased to feature new additions to her collection on the ACG online store.
This pendant features a beautiful labradorite stone. This stone is found in Canada and, according to an Inuit legend, is tied to the aurora borealis. An Inuit warrior saw that Aurora was trapped in a stone and used his spear to set the light free.

If you saw Adriana's work at the gallery in La Grange, you will know her as a jewelry designer. However, what you may not have known was that she is also an accomplished painter using a variety of mediums to create energetic and beautiful pieces.

Adriana describes her recent works on paper and canvas:
"Lately I have been enthralled with the idea of building up layer upon layer of visual information to try to represent the passage and movement of time throughout history.
In addition to traditional acrylic painting I incorporate various mixed media elements and techniques such as paper collage, stenciling, monoprinting, acrylic paint skins, oil sticks, gel pens, water soluble crayons as well as acrylic texture mediums, gesso, inks and fluid acrylics.

"Tango" is a piece that is particularly close to Adriana's heart as Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the birthplace of the dance as well as her own birthplace. As you look at this piece, you can see examples of painting and collage as well as other techniques.

"Run wild, strong and free across the land
Freedom will be yours for all time
They will never tame or tie you down
Over miles and up mountains you climb"
