People are often surprised just how easy it can be to see the difference in quality between an appliance designed to be used for decades and one meant to be thrown away in just a few short years. Once they have a well-built machine in their hands, its obvious.
The problem is, the big box stores often don't carry the kind of quality appliances that department stores did 30 years ago, which were meant to be one-time purchases that would be in a family's home for a long time. Over time, that market drove out performance and reliability in favor of a lower price--at all costs. Unsuspecting customers, who remembered their parents having the same appliances their whole lives, had no reason not to expect the same. And now, there's nothing of quality left in those stores to compare it to.
Fortunately they do still make them like they used to--you just have to know where to look.
