When we planted the first seeds in our cutting garden last year, we knew we wanted to grow flowers — but we were also curious about what might grow from the idea itself.

Ever since that first season, we’ve been thinking about how we could share some of what we grow.

This weekend, we harvested flowers from the garden, made them into bouquets, and brought them down to the roadside for the first time.

There is a particular kind of joy in growing something from seed, tending it through the season, and then watching it leave in someone else’s hands.

What began as a cutting garden is becoming part of a larger tradition at Topo Pino — growing what we love, learning as we go, and sharing what we’ve learned along the way. 🌿

Our second summer growing cosmos, and they have quickly become a favorite.

There is something wonderfully whimsical about them in full bloom — white and soft pink flowers floating above feathery foliage, long stems bending and swaying with the slightest breeze.

We love them cut, but perhaps even more like this: flowing through the garden, softening the rows and looking entirely at home against the old house and woods beyond.

Nothing looks particularly arranged. That is precisely the charm.

By late summer, the zinnias seem to take over.

We cut an armful, come back a few days later, and somehow there are more waiting.

They’re one of the simplest flowers we grow: direct-sown once the weather warms, unfussy through summer, and happiest when we keep cutting them.

A handful of seeds becomes weeks of color—and enough flowers for the kitchen table, a bedside glass, and a few to give away.

Extraordinary color, minimal fuss. That’s the combination we’re always looking for.

A walk through the Bloomery at Topo Pino. 🌸

This was our first season direct sowing the garden, and an exercise in patience from the very beginning. For weeks, we watered and weeded, watched small seedlings emerge, and waited to see what would become of the rows we had planted.

By mid-August, that patience is being rewarded.

Zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, celosia, scabiosa, strawflower and herbs now fill the garden—and each walk through the rows brings something new into bloom.

A basketful of August at Topo Pino.

This was our first season growing the cutting garden entirely from seed. After weeks of watering, weeding, waiting, and watching the rows take shape, August has brought armfuls of flowers—and plenty of lessons to carry into next year.

Friday in the Bloomery. 🌿

Every week the garden looks a little different.

The first sunflowers are beginning to bloom, the rows are filling in, and the vision we imagined this spring is slowly taking shape. It’s a reminder that the best gardens—and the most meaningful things—are built one day, one season, and one small task at a time.

Some of my favorite moments happen after dinner, walking the rows to see what’s changed since morning and planning tomorrow’s work.

Here’s to another beautiful New England summer.
