Seeing rust on your leaf springs doesn’t automatically mean they need to be replaced.

Leaf springs are going to develop rust over time. What really matters is whether the steel is beginning to deteriorate, become deeply pitted, or lose its normal arch.

And here’s something that may surprise you: a trailer can sometimes still pass inspection with a broken leaf, depending on which leaf is broken and the condition of the rest of the spring pack.

One of the easiest ways to get pulled over while towing a trailer?

It’s something a lot of people don’t check before they ever get out on the road.

Before you leave the driveway, turn on your headlights and do a quick walk-around. Check your trailer lights, marker lights, tail lights, brake lights and turn signals. If it’s on your trailer, it needs to work.

And if your trailer lights aren’t working, don’t immediately assume you have a bad light. Check your plug and connections. A small amount of dielectric grease can help keep those connections fresh and reduce corrosion.

It takes less than a minute to check, but it could help you avoid getting pulled over and catch a problem before it becomes a bigger one.

YOUR TRAILER JACKS AREN’T SERVICEABLE! ⚠️

Most trailer owners don’t think about their jack until it stops working.

The problem? Many trailer jacks don’t have a lot of serviceable parts, and finding the correct replacement gears can be difficult. You need to know exactly who made the jack and the specific model because parts from one manufacturer often won’t fit another.

If your jack has a Zerk fitting, give it some grease a couple of times a year to help keep those gears moving. But when the jack finally needs replacing, you need the right jack for your trailer.

🚨 TRAILER SWAY? You may be loading it wrong.

If your trailer starts moving back and forth at highway speeds, the trailer itself may not be the problem. How you distribute the weight can make all the difference.

A good rule of thumb is to keep about 60% of your load in front of the axle and maintain approximately 10–15% tongue weight.

Too little tongue weight and you can get the “tail wagging the dog.” That can make your trailer difficult to control, especially at higher speeds.

Before you hit the road, make sure you’re loading your trailer correctly.
