We woke to our usual bedside clock alarms that morning. Listened to the drone of radios and tv’s as white noise, as we prepared school lunches. Gathered business papers. Dressed little ones hurriedly. We gave goodbye kisses without thinking. We drove on the same familiar roads. Some took the exact subway ride to the same stop that they made every single day. Went to the coffee shop on the corner. Someone, somewhere, took notice of the sky. How absolutely and incredibly blue it was.
Twenty five years ago, when in the course of a day, trajectories were changed. A world turned upside down. A day when in retrospect, those ordinary things before, became treasured moments. Remembered. A day when ordinary people, did extraordinary things. A day when so many lives were lost. A day when news that had been white noise, wasn’t that any longer.
On this day, we remember those who lost their lives that day. To those responders that willingly gave theirs, we have the utmost honor and respect. You have taught us what the word hero embodies. Thank you.
Our greatest tribute to them, is to remember that no day is ordinary. We only make them so. And no person, is just a person, for they ran into the fires in hopes of saving even one.
Remembering 9/11.
Never forget.

Misunderstood.
His frown. Her color of green.

He sat by himself, deep in thought. Others passing by viewed him as the grumpy frog. But he wasn’t. Inside, he was happy as a clam. The frown he wore, was his resting face. He had a smile that was so broad it spanned the space from ear to ear. And yes…frogs do have ears. They’re just not like ours. See, another misunderstanding. Or misconception. We are fraught with those. But back to his smile…
It could light up a room, as they say.
Or launch a thousand ships.
But no one knew for they didn’t stay long enough to see. They didn’t get to know him.
There’s always a back story.
We really need to hear the back stories.

I’m smiling ear to ear because Ricky Rain Frog is back in stock.
And so many more! We got boxes upon boxes!!
Stop in to see them all!

‘We will be having friends for dinner,” mum had said as she cleaned and straightened their home in the glen. She had gotten out the best linens, checking them for moss colored stains. Dandelion greens and blades of grass were notorious for leaving evidence of past meals. She said they were clues as to the fare they had feasted on the previous night. She was fastidious about scrubbing them and laying them out so the sun could bleach them white again.

The young hare watched his mum as she puttered away, setting the table, sweeping the floors, and washing the windows until they sparkled. She even arranged a fragrant bouquet mixed with wild honeysuckle and violets.

He was horrified. And in his mind, rightly so.

For what he heard his mum say, was that they were having friends FOR DINNER. And he took that quite literally. Little did he know, that what she meant was that his friends, potato and ginger, would be joining them for dinner. As guests. Not the main course.

His mum had turned from her cleaning and saw the hare’s face drained of color, white as the snow when it first falls.
“Oh my, whatever is wrong?”
“I just can’t do it, mum. I love ginger and potato. But I can’t eat them…they’re my friends.”
Mum drew the little hare close and hugged him tight.

Sometimes we do not speak completely or clearly. Sometimes our inflection or lack thereof, changes context and content.
What we hear is not always truth.
Our friends need not be roasted..unless of course, you are honoring them and are a comedian. I believe then, that is allowed.
Keep listening.
Keep questioning.
Keep the lines of communication always open.

The thing about pouches…
They allow us to organize and congregate our belongings.
They make life easier to navigate. Make travel more efficient.
They can hold pencils and pens.
Or compacts and bottles of makeup.
They can become money carriers and passport keepers.
They can hold trinkets and toys.
Their function is multifaceted.
Multi-functional.

As the young girl sat with bath fizzies scattered and one yummy madeleine to consume, her issue was not that they would not fit inside her frog pouch. The issue was that ‘fragrance’ and ‘flavor’ are not good companions. She didn’t want her madeleine to taste like a citrus grove or sweet honey. Nor did she want her fizzies to have cookie crumbles dusted on them.

There are times we have to make hard decisions. Executive ones. Action is required and we need to use the problem solving skills that we have acquired.

She looked at her cache of goodies one more time, and then carefully popped one brilliant orange and one true blue bath fizzie into the pouch. She pulled the zipper closed securely. It wasn’t a hard decision. Not all that difficult. She wished all decisions could be resolved this easily.
She picked up the madeleine and smiled.
Her tummy rumbled like rolling thunder.
No, not a difficult decision at all.

I watch her sitting on the counter, and I am taken back some forty odd years to another store that belonged to my mum. The years have melted away. I see my oldest daughter at this age. It is another counter. Different merchandise. Her Pop Pop scoops her up and puts her in an umbrella stroller that has literally been around the block hundreds of times. He walks the streets; an uneven arthritic gait and an old stroller with an equally bent frame. They seem made for each other. The rhythm lulls the little one to sleep every time they take off on these walks. He walks her, while I work.

My granddaughter, who sits on my counter, has been privy to stroller rides as well. The same sidewalks. Just a different grandpa. Her ‘Pop Pop’ is known as Baba. And the stroller is one that is not rickety. The ride is smooth. The effect though, has always been the same. It doesn’t matter the mode of transportation. Sleep for the child. Satisfaction for the one pushing precious cargo.

Generations of merchants.

Wishing you a Happy Labor Day today!
We are closed today.

Nothing says ‘cozy’ quite like warm spices baking or simmering in pots on stovetops. The aromas speak of nostalgia and create an invitation of welcome. Come sit for a while. Here’s a soft blanket and a cup of cider to chase away the sudden chill that we haven’t become accustomed to yet.

“Hello September. I didn’t officially greet you this year.”
The very young pumpkin had forgotten to flip his calendar indicating that it was most certainly so. He mulled over thoughts of different ways he could avoid this happening, for he had missed August’s beginning and he was sure that the same had happened to July.
“Why don’t you put two calendar months side by side instead of having only one showing? Then you could see everything that is about to happen for two months? Then you’d never have to be surprised.” Bat was very good at proposing new ideas, even though many times they were not received with as much enthusiasm.
“I think that’s just batty,” the pumpkin replied. “Then I’d have to find more space on my wall to accommodate another page. How on earth would I do that?”
“Maybe you could put the calendar pages on the refrigerator door? That would be an idea!” Bat was very excited about this novel idea.
“Real estate on the refrigerator is already taken. Have you seen my magnet collection yet? Or the photos they hold? No…that is a very bad idea Bat.”
“How about I just remind you at the end of every month? Since I am up at night, I see the next days coming before you do. We can work as a team! Teamwork is always a good idea, right?”
Pumpkin thought and thought. He looked at the idea from every angle possible. He couldn’t put another page on his already crowded wall. His refrigerator was totally out of the question. This last idea may just work. Only one problem seemed to surface.
“Will this affect my beauty sleep if you wake me to tell me?”
“Of course not! Pumpkins don’t need beauty sleeps. Everyone loves a pumpkin. They are always beautiful. On the other hand, not everyone loves a bat.”
“Oh…but they should. Bats are very useful. And smart! You are the best problem solver! Maybe more people should hang upside down.”

Happy September!!!

The three c’s.
Coffee. Chocolate. And clouds.
In all of the craziness of connecting flights, and navigating different times, these three are my grounding. My common ground. For I’ve found there is an abundance of these wherever you go. Wherever you are. And that is what connects us…familiar things. The things we know. What makes us see that east coast, west coast, are much the same. There may be bigger mountains in one place, or more fields in another, but when it all comes down to it, our creature comforts are so much the same. There is a warmth in that knowledge. That even though the distance in miles between us is vast, we are closer than we think. The same sky connects us. The love of coffee joins us. And chocolate? Well, that’s just the icing on the cake. To see this cheerful storefront in downtown Seattle made me smile. Hello chocolate.
Paired with one of my other very favorite things…flamingos.
Thank you Seattle for all of the smiles you’ve given me. It was hard to leave, but I’ll be back. Count on it.
