The world’s largest catfish was caught in a river in Italy – and released.

In Italy’s River Po, a fisherman hauled in a freshwater giant – a catfish longer than a man is tall.

The wels catfish measured 9.4 feet (2.85 meters), making it the largest of its kind ever recorded. When it surfaced, the angler said he knew at once he had hooked a monster.

Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) are the largest freshwater fish in Europe. Native to Central and Eastern Europe, they were introduced to rivers only in the early 2000s. In warm, food-rich waters like the Po, they grow at astonishing rates. While a of 6 feet in colder northern waters can be 70 years old, experts estimate a fish this size in the Po is just 20 to 30 years old.

The River Po is a hotspot for these whiskered giants, producing multiple record-breaking catches. Scientists note that high temperatures, abundant prey, and a stable habitat have allowed them to thrive – though drought and changing conditions may threaten the ecosystem’s balance in the years to come.

After being measured, the catfish was released back into the river. Its sheer size highlights both the incredible adaptability of this species and the changing dynamics of Europe’s rivers.

✅ Instead, set up a bee-friendly watering station:
• Use a shallow dish of fresh .
• Add small rocks or sticks so bees can land safely.
• For extra benefit, sprinkle in a pinch of pink Himalayan 🤍 giving them essential needed to regulate temperature (about 90°F), crucial for & raising young.

💛 Most important:
Let bees forage naturally. Avoid direct feeding — it’s better for their health & immunity.
