September 7, 1987: Pink Floyd Began a New Era with A Momentary Lapse of Reason

On September 7, 1987, Pink Floyd released A Momentary Lapse of Reason in the UK. Exactly one day later, on September 8, the album was released in the United States, bringing the beginning of Pink Floyd’s post-Roger Waters era to both sides of the Atlantic.

David Gilmour and Nick Mason carried Pink Floyd forward, with Richard Wright once again contributing to the music. Produced by Gilmour and Bob Ezrin, the album delivered a distinctly late-1980s interpretation of the Pink Floyd sound through “Learning to Fly,” “On the Turning Away,” “One Slip” and the epic “Sorrow.”

A Momentary Lapse of Reason reached #3 in both the UK and US and was followed by a hugely successful world tour. Whatever doubts surrounded Pink Floyd’s future after Waters, its near-simultaneous British and American release announced the beginning of another major chapter in the band’s history.
