I haven’t been posting much - not because horses have become any less important to me. Or because stable & fields has disappeared. Mostly because, over the past two years, I’ve learned a lot about time — how finite it is, how quickly it gets spoken for, and how much it matters where we choose to spend it.
Just two years ago, Scott and I gave up our ranch in California and re-homed 3 horses to move across the country to live with his parents and become their caregivers. I knew it would change our lives. I don’t think I understood all the ways it would change me.
There have been things I’ve had to put down. Things I’ve held onto. And a few things I’ve realized I want to make more room for.
Cosmo, thankfully, remains firmly in that last category.
My mother-in-law has Alzheimer’s, and so much of her world has become smaller and less familiar. But Cosmo still reaches her. She may not remember the visit later. She may not be able to tell you much about it. But in the moment, there is recognition, interest, affection — and joy.
And I’ve come to understand that the moment counts.
Maybe more than I ever understood before.
As I come up on the two-year anniversary of leaving California, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want the next chapter to look like — for stable & fields, for my work in the horse world, and for me.
There are some changes coming. Not dramatic reinventions. Just decisions about where I want to put my time, my energy and the things I still have to experience.
But for now…this:
A 90-year-old woman. A very good chestnut boy. And a moment that mattered. 🧡
