Minturn Anglers Supports Amendment 83: Grab Your Free Yard Sign Today
For more than a century, hunters and anglers have been the backbone of wildlife conservation in Colorado. Consider the greenback cutthroat trout, our state fish. Once feared extinct, it is now reproducing again in restored Colorado waters thanks to decades of careful, science-driven work by state biologists.
That success story is funded by sportsmen and women. Our license fees and the excise taxes on our rods and reels pay for the habitat protection, hatcheries, stream restoration, and research that benefit every species and every Coloradan, regardless if you hunt or fish.
This is the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation at work: wildlife held in public trust, managed by trained biologists, and funded by the people who hunt and fish. It is one of the most successful conservation systems in the world, and it works because decisions are grounded in science.
That system is under attack. Activist groups have repeatedly tried to set wildlife policy through emotional campaigns rather than sound biology. Denver voters saw a proposed fur ban on the 2024 ballot. This year, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission advanced a petition to ban fur sales statewide, over the objection of its own agency biologists, a proposal that would have restricted fly-tying materials anglers have used for generations. The Commission ultimately withdrew it, but the message is clear: these efforts will keep coming and the fly fishing community is not immune from it either.
This is why Minturn Anglers strongly supports Amendment 83. It would establish the right to hunt and fish in the Colorado Constitution while keeping wildlife management in the hands of scientists and professionals, not ballot box biology. Existing regulations, licenses, and protections for threatened and endangered species stay in place.
