Happy Labor Day!

Join us this Wednesday for a FREE movie night! We are watching the 1954 independent film “Salt of The Earth”, directed by Herbert J. Biberman.

At New Mexico’s Empire Zinc mine, Mexican-American workers protest the unsafe work conditions and unequal wages compared to their Anglo counterparts. Ramon Quintero helps organize the strike, but he is shown to be a hypocrite by treating his pregnant wife, Esperanza, with a similar unfairness. When an injunction stops the men from protesting, however, the gender roles are reversed, and women find themselves on the picket lines while the men stay at home.

One of the first motion pictures to advance the feminist social and political point of view, as well as one of the first fully independent films made outside of the Hollywood studio system. Originally suppressed by Red Scare controversy, it was kept alive through various independent theaters, collectors and political movements until it was finally selected for perseveration in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry of significant U.S. films.

We will be open later for movie night, and the cafe will be serving before, during intermission and after the conclusion of the film for a short time. Feel free to stick around for a discussion after!

*SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT*

Zoe Lemon, Sacred Canopy & pirl at Ship to Shore!

Zoe (rhymes with toe!) Lemon is a chamber alt pop project full of layered strings, warm vocals, and introspective songwriting. Her debut EP, Tailspin, was featured on WXPN, WKDU, and NPR. Last year, she released a second EP - A Coin in the Mouth of a Fish - a collection written during a season when she felt like she wasn’t measuring up to her own expectations. She shows up on tour with colorful merch & a la croix in hand!!

Sacred Canopy is the electronic ambient project of Matt Bahnsen. Matt utilizes synthesizers and loopers to create soundscapes inspired by lived experiences and films.

pirl crafts a blend of noise and ambience through the use of accordion, found sounds, voices from friends, q-chord, synthesizers, viola, and cassette tape sampling.

Thurs, September 24th. Music starts at 7:30. The cafe will be open all evening, serving full menu in between sets.

A $15 donation is suggested that goes directly to the artists performing. No one ever turned away for lack of funds.

“When these eight Native American plants crossed the ocean after 1492, the world’s cuisines were changed forever. In Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky, James Beard Award-winning author and chef Lois Ellen Frank introduces the splendor and importance of this Native culinary history and pairs it with delicious, modern, plant-based recipes using Native American ingredients. Along with Native American culinary advisor Walter Whitewater, Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky shares more than 100 nutritious, plant based recipes organized by each of the foundational ingredients in Native American cuisine as well as a necessary discussion of food sovereignty and sustainability.

A delicious, enlightening celebration of Indigenous foods and Southwestern flavors, Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky shares recipes for dishes such as Blue Corn Hotcakes with Prickly Pear Syrup, Three Sisters Stew, and Green Chile Enchilada Lasagna, as well as essential basics like Corn Masa, Red and Green Chile Sauces, and Cacao Spice Rub. The “Magic 8” ingredients share the page—and plate—to create recipes that will transform your world.” via Lakota Times

As of today, WE’VE BEEN OPEN A WHOLE YEAR!

What a quick whirlwind of a year it has been. Thank you to every person who has helped us, stopped in, bought from us, participated in the community, left us a review, helped with events… thank you for everything, Lorain & beyond! We absolutely love being part of this quickly renewing Downtown Lorain and extend our love to all the others who are making this community so vibrant in their own way. It’s a lot of work, but we love what we do and we are so happy to open our doors every day to such an incredible, supportive and wonderful community. We’ve been lucky to have had such a solid crew of employees with us over the course of this year and have to shout out all of them past & present - thank you Emy, Rosie, Mya, Mia, Campell, Pip & Leslie!

We left out a few coupons around the shop for you to find. Some are discounts, some are for free items. It’s a small, small way to say thank you to everyone. One coupon per person, please!

We want to give a quick shout out to some other businesses who have just been so deeply helpful to us over the years on getting started and steps forward as we opened our doors. So many of the folks at these places were not shy to help link us up with suppliers, offer advice, help with fixes, training, partnerships and are just all generally good people; so a special thank you to
